The Students’ Union is a vital part of university life, providing students with a voice and ensuring they get the most out of their studies. It represents students’ rights and interests and organises events across the university, including nights out and the annual Varsity competition, where Team Greenwich and Team Medway compete to be Varsity champions.
Students across the three campuses are represented by Greenwich Students’ Union (GSU). The Students’ Union space is located in Dreadnought Building, which reopened in September 2018 following a £25-million refurbishment. GSU Digital Tribe keeps students connected when they are not on campus with online events and community groups.
GSU is led by an elected team of four full-time and 11 part-time officers. Students at the Medway Campus are represented by GK Unions, which is a partnership between GSU and Kent Union.
Reviewers are happy with the number of activities the SU has organised, as well as the work they’re doing on behalf of the students. Some past examples include extending the running times of the free campus bus and implementing 24/7 opening hours of the on-campus launderette facilities.
University of Greenwich students on Whatuni say:

The Students’ Union (SU) has over 60 academic, fun and sports-related student societies. Current societies include the Anime & Games Society, the Disney Society, a Dance Society and Radio GRE – perfect for all budding DJs. Sports clubs range from hockey, cheerleading and rugby to yoga and meditation. Students can also start their own club or group.
The SU also runs the Give-It-A-Go programme, which lists new events, activities and trips for students to get involved in, without the commitment of becoming a member of a society or group. There are also numerous volunteering opportunities listed on the SU website.

“It’s a good way for you to explore an interest that you don't necessarily study.”

“There is a big variety of clubs and everyone is very active.”
Avery Hill Campus is just a 10-minute bus journey or a thirty-minute walk from Eltham. This south-east London neighbourhood has a wide expanse of green spaces – perfect for picnics on a sunny day. The local high street has a multi-screen cinema, a variety of shops, restaurants and pubs, and there is a monthly Sunday market.
Greenwich Campus is spoilt for nearby attractions. Greenwich itself has acres of parkland, a popular market, an abundance of nice pubs and restaurants, clubs, and a comedy club. The campus is near to the famous Royal Observatory, where the Prime Meridian Line divides eastern and western hemispheres. Central London is just 20 minutes away by train, where students can explore tourist hot-spots, including the West End, Oxford Street and Brick Lane.
A short stroll from Medway Campus, the Dockside Outlet Centre offers students a choice of restaurants and a cinema. Further west is Rochester, with its array of shops, tearooms, eateries and pubs, as well as a castle and cathedral. For football fans, the Priestfield Stadium is in nearby Gillingham, while county cricket is played in Tunbridge Wells and Canterbury. London is 45 minutes away by train.
Reviews highlight the sheer amount that students can do across the different campuses when they aren’t in lectures.
