The university has a large and very active Student’s Union, who act as the representational voice of its student community as well as organising a lively timetable of events throughout the academic year.
Highlights include:
Welsh Varsity - Swansea and Cardiff universities compete in more than 30 different sports in what is the biggest student event in Wales and the second largest in the UK, behind Oxford-Cambridge. The event concludes with the varsity rugby match, drawing crowds of up to 20,000 and broadcast on live TV.
Summer Ball - An evening of festivity to mark the end of the academic year, held in the grassy grounds of the Singleton Park Campus. Former acts include Jess Glynne, Professor Green and Lethal Bizzle.
Swansea’s student-run SU is comprised of a team of officers, coordinators and volunteers. Students are welcome to get involved with the running of the SU during their time at university, and reviewers are praiseworthy of the accessibility and diversity of events offered.
Swansea University students on Whatuni say:
"The students’ union host a lot of events, both on campus and online so as an off-site student this is something, I have been able to participate in. I have taken part in online pub quizzes as just 1 example. The SU is a good to get in contact with if there is any part of uni life that you feel could be improved or changed. They take time to listen to your ideas and concerns and put them forward.”
"Incredible team of students union officers, especially in regard to the emphasis put on student voice”
"The students union are always on hand to offer advice and sign post you to services which has been a huge help! Plus, the freshers activities they prepare are generally excellent.”
"Going to the SU after/between lectures for a pint leads to meeting so many people in first year while on campus. Second year they were still good places to go to. Watching sports games there is a lot of fun, the SU on Bay also has board games.”
The Swansea University SU organises a huge range of clubs and societies for its population of around 20,000 students. Societies involve sports teams, academic groups, language clubs and a whole world of special interest groups to suit all preferences.
There are 170 societies in total, with dozens of sports teams and the university-run Sport for All initiative which offers opportunities for involvement at any level from beginner to elite athlete.
Swansea provides dozens of options for those wanting to try something new, whether for recreational purposes, social reasons, or to develop skills for future careers. The university encourages and support the creation of new clubs and societies where they are not currently established.
Swansea University students on Whatuni say:
"Over 200 societies and 60 sports teams! Available for any levels on a weekly basis.”
"These societies are advertised everywhere so it is really easy to find out what’s going on and who to contact if you want to get involved. As the majority are run by current students, they are activities which work really well around your studies and allow you to engage with students across different courses.”
"Pitches and sport facilities are available to anyone and have recently been relayed so they are at a world-class standard.”
“There’s so many societies and none of them will turn you away. You can tryout at trials or just join as a social member if you want. The social events on Wednesday nights are so much fun. Join a society, take a mate if you're scared or message someone from the Facebook page beforehand, but just bite the bullet and join!!”
There are many advantages to living in Swansea, and its proximity to the beach is probably the most obvious. The city has several beaches within a short walk of the centre. Both university campuses are located on the beachfront, ideally placed for summer BBQs, windy winter walks, and some of the best surfing locations in the UK.
The city centre is a bustling hub of cafés, restaurants, shops and attractions such as art galleries and museums, providing a wide array of activities for students to discover. The city is well serviced by local public transport routes, offering a 24-hour timetable which allows students to take advantage of the nightlife for which Swansea is so well known. Wind Street is the late-night centre of city life, with many clubs, bars and live music venues within convenient distance of each other.
Swansea University students on Whatuni say:
"I am situated very close to town and live on the biggest hill in Swansea so have an amazing view of the beach and everything around.”
"Very close to the university, beach and town so ideal for student balanced lifestyle. No need for cars and always something to do if interested.”
"Everything you need within walking distance! Amazing public transport links.”
"Great transport links to campuses, accommodation, beaches and shops. There’re mumbles which is where you can enjoy walks and ice cream, plenty of beaches and places to walk which you can get to by bus and the marina. There’s popular wind street with loads of clubs and bars always bustling even now!”
