Run by students, the Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union is led by eight Student Officers who are democratically elected each year.
The Students' Union is the voice of all students across the university and it’s there to help students make things happen. Students can volunteer and join a society through the Union, plus it’s a great venue for food, drinks and nightlife events.
The Union is a completely different entity from the university, so students can get independent advice and support there too. All students are automatically members of the Students’ Union, and they can find the Union at the City Campus in the “HUBS” building.
“The SU always ensure you're well informed.”
“I have previously been involved in committee positions for societies, been supported to get volunteering experience, as well as have something to show for those experiences in the form of the Hallam Award.”
“Really good, nice cafe hold events such as sample sales with big fashion brands (pretty little thing, missguided). Has a bar which holds quizzes and things like that.”
One of the best parts of Hallam experience, is the availability and diversity of the university’s extracurricular activities. It’s not only a a great way to make new friends, student also get the change to develop existing talents and try something new.
There are more than 120 student societies at Sheffield Hallam. From debating and tea drinking to breakdancing and Harry Potter, there’s something for everyone.
Clubs are split into different categories.
Students can join over 30 social sport sessions a week and over 80 fitness classes in everything from aerobics to yoga. With more than 30 sports clubs, there are plenty of opportunities to compete for the university.
If students can’t find a society they like, then they can even start their own.
“We have variety of societies in university, you can find everything that you want according to your interest. If you didn't find it, you can organize your own society, this process is easy. All these societies have many events during the year”.
“The Clubs and Societies are extremely varied so there is always something for everyone. They are extremely welcoming and provide a good space to try new actively and meet friends”.
“There is a good range of options and they support a wide range of people.”
Sheffield is a great place to be a student, especially as it’s ranked as one the most affordable cities in the UK. The city is known for its independent culture in particular, which includes cafes, restaurants, shops and businesses.
With a large student population of over 60,000 individuals, students will never be short of student-based activities or friends to join them. Sheffield is surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire countryside and has plenty going on to keep students occupied.
The Collegiate Campus is located in the Ecclesall Road student area, just a 25-minute walk or 10-minute bus journey from the train station and City Campus. Students are surrounded by shops, cafes, restaurants and parks, a student gym and 24-hour library.
Hallam is based in the heart of the city centre, just a few minutes from the train station, with easy travel to the rest of the country too.

“The city is really friendly and there is a lot of shops on hand to go shopping with friends which are only a few minutes-walk away from the uni. There is also lots of places to go for food and drink and Meadowhall is only short tram ride away. The nightlife is good with a lot of bars and clubs located around west street and the city centre.”
