Run by students, the Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union is led by six Student Officers who are democratically elected each year.
The students' union is the voice of all students across the university and is there to help students make things happen. Students can volunteer and join a society through the union, plus it’s a great venue for food, drinks and nightlife events.
The union is a completely different entity from the university, so students can get independent advice and support there too. All students are automatically members of the students’ union, and they can find the union at the City Campus in the “HUBS” building.
Sheffield Hallam University students on Postgraduate Search say:
“Student engaging activities are carried out by the university almost every week.”
“The university has a diverse environment. Its student friendly/supportive.”
One of the best parts of the Sheffield Hallam experience is the availability and diversity of the university’s extracurricular activities. It’s not only a great way to make new friends, but also gives students the chance to develop existing talents and try something new.
There are more than 80 student societies at Sheffield Hallam. From debating and tea drinking to breakdancing and Harry Potter, there’s something for everyone. If students can’t find a society they like, then they can even start their own.
Clubs are split into different categories.
Students can join our social sports with more than 30 sports clubs to choose from. There are plenty of opportunities to compete for the university and over 12 fitness classes in everything from circuits to yoga.
Sheffield is a great place to be a student, and was recently ranked the most affordable student city in the UK (The Royal Bank of Scotland’s Student Living Index 2021). The city is particularly known for its independent culture, which includes cafes, restaurants, shops and businesses.
With a large student population of over 60,000 individuals, students will never be short of student-based activities or friends to join them.
Sheffield is a green city full of parks and surrounded by the beautiful countryside, including the nearby Peak District National Park.
The Collegiate Campus is located in the Ecclesall Road student area, just a 25-minute walk or 10-minute bus journey from the train station and City Campus. Students are surrounded by shops, cafes, restaurants and parks, a student gym and 24-hour library.
Hallam is based in the heart of the city centre, just a few minutes from the train station, with easy travel to the rest of the country too.
Sheffield Hallam University students on Postgraduate Search say:
“Sheffield is the 4th largest city in England, this makes it a perfect pick for various opportunities.”
“Sheffield, the greenest city in the UK, is a great place to study.”
“Sheffield is open and the people are warm. It can be a bit windy, but once you learn to dress for the weather then you're good to go.”
