Coronavirus Advice

The Coronavirus pandemic has changed the way in which students are studying around the world. In response to this change, Point Blank’s pioneering ‘Blended Learning’ approach to delivering courses, encompasses both physical and online teaching practises.

For students unable to make it to the London campus, courses can now be studied using a combination of physical & online tuition, via the Point Blank Virtual Classroom and award-winning VLE (Virtual Learning Environment).

Following UK Government advice, the Point Blank London campus is open and the school has introduced a range of measures to keep students safe whilst studying onsite:

  • Managed social-distancing
  • Daily deep cleaning of the building
  • Free hand sanitiser, gloves and masks
  • Regular antibacterial / antiviral “fogging” 
  • Temperature checks on entering the building

The safety of students and staff is the school’s number one concern.

From headline DJs and superstar singers, to hit-making producers and industry heavy weights, Point Blank alumni count as some of the biggest names in music today. Point Blank makes full use of its extensive links within the music industry to support students in achieving their career goals.

Through the school’s connections, students have landed internships and jobs at internationally renowned organisations including: Defected, Tape London, BBC Radio 1Xtra and Rinse FM.

From industry and artist masterclasses, student showcases and networking events, job opportunities and careers advice, to A&R mentoring and more, Point Blank connects its students to the “real-world” music industry, enabling them to reach their full potential and build the music industry career they want.

The school even has its own record label - Point Blank Recordings – from which students have seen their music picked up by Kiss FM and BBC Introducing.

Point Blank’s expert teaching staff come from all areas of the music industry and with years of first-hand experience, these industry insiders really know their stuff.

Lecturers are carefully selected to ensure they are proactive, credible and highly experienced. Benefit from their insider knowledge and the connections that the school’s dedicated, TEF Silver awarded teaching team have built up during their professional careers.

Point Blank courses are hands-on, practical and engaging, taught by industry professionals in the school’s state-of-the-art music studios, complete with industry standard equipment from Native Instruments and Pioneer DJ, amongst others.

Extensive 1-2-1 time is given on the courses to ensure plenty of guidance for students as they “learn through doing” in interactive lectures and studio sessions that revolve around getting hands-on and learning how to do in practice, not just in theory.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, the school offers Blended Learning that allows those that can’t make it to campus, or that would rather not travel, to learn remotely online. Point Blank has over a decade of experience in successfully delivering online courses using their innovative Virtual Classroom and world-class VLE (Virtual Learning Environment).

Whether a student studies on campus or online, or a combination of both, they’ll be able to access everything they need to kick-start their course and music career with confidence.

Point Blank London offers a range of BA (Hons) Degree programmes, including Music Production & Sound Engineering, Music Industry Management and Music Production & DJ Practice. The school also offers a Foundation Year course, two-year DipHE diplomas, and one year CertHE certificate.

All Point Blank Music School degrees are validated and awarded by Middlesex University.

While Point Blank has no official Students’ Union, students do have access to a range of resources to aid and support student life, as well as collaborate and socialise with fellow students.

This includes an official Student Council, well-being and welfare support and regular student socials. There is additionally a vibrant local scene full of music venues, bars, pubs and restaurants where many school events take place.

While the school doesn’t provide accommodation for students in the way of Halls of Residence, its website lists a range of housing options for students. Point Blank also provides various ways for students looking for accommodation to connect, there is a Point Blank Facebook group for students looking to live with other students for example. In addition, the school provides exclusive deals and discounts where possible by working with external student accommodation providers.

Based in the heart of East London’s cool and vibrant Hoxton, Point Blank’s on-campus facilities mirror the latest professional studios and provides hands-on experience with industry level kit. Its modern classrooms hold just 16 students, so every student gets a fully equipped workstation and lots of individual attention.

Point Blank is one of the only schools in the UK with a 48-channel SSL Duality Delta SuperAnalogue™ console. The facilities also feature 12 professional studios for teaching, as well as 5 additional recording studios that students are able to book at any time as part of their course. The central Hub area also ensures that students across all courses - including music production, radio and singing - can network and collaborate on site.

The DJ Studio is supported by Pioneer DJ and features the very latest equipment, including CDJ2000nxs, DJM2000nxs, DDJ-SX controllers, PLX-1000 turntables and more. Students can take a photo tour of the London studios here. Additional studios are fully equipped and supported by Ableton and Native Instruments.

Students are able to study on campus and online, utilising our Virtual Classroom and Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), accessing course notes, instructional videos, student announcements and more.

Point Blank is in the centre of hip East London, Hoxton. The area features a variety of independent record and fashion shops, plus clubs, bars, cafes and a thriving live music scene on the doorstep of the school.

The nearest overground station is Hoxton, while Old Street tube is just a 10-minute walk away. There are numerous bus routes that pass nearby so, wherever students travel from, they have access to excellent transport connections surrounding the school, making Point Blank easy to reach.

Students at Point Blank enjoy a highly active student life, benefitting from a range of regular student events and socials. The school supports a range of student-led societies, covering everything from industrial techno, to football, baking and more.

As an inclusive school that celebrates diversity, Point Blank supports a number of societies that represent minority groups and provide input into the School’s EDI, access and outreach work, as well as support for students from those groups and opportunities to connect and share experiences.

In addition, the school provides various student socials, showcases and events that provide opportunities to perform in front of an audience and established industry figures and peers.

Point Blank also host regular Ableton User Groups and bi-monthly Native Instrument Meetup events at their London school, giving students additional opportunities to meet new people, share knowledge, ideas and get up to date with the latest in music technology.

Point Blank fosters an environment where students feel welcomed and supported throughout their studies. To this end, all Point Blank’s degree courses feature 1-2-1 sessions and in-depth regular feedback on students’ work.

Point Blank also provides a range of support to enrolled students who have specific learning difficulties and disabilities, including a student counsellor on site. Specific examples of support and adjustments on offer include:

Point Blank Music School won the 'Best Independent HE' category at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards in recent years. Point Blank is recognised as a top ranked global music school for Music Production courses, Sound Engineering courses, DJ courses and related creative media studies.

Point Blank Music School has also been awarded a Silver (Teaching Excellence Framework) award and in the latest National Student Survey (NSS), Point Blank scored 84% for overall student satisfaction in their HE courses, including online degrees, putting them in the top tier of independent music Schools.

Entry requirements

The following guidelines are designed to orientate you through entry on to a Higher Education course at Point Blank. If you would like to apply, please visit their website. 

Point Blank are looking for people who can demonstrate a) their passion for music and b) an ability to successfully complete a Higher Education programme.

This will initially be assessed through your personal statement which should include any previous study or relevant experience in music. The Admissions Team will look at the merits of each applicant, taking the following evidence into consideration:

  • Personal statement
  • Predicted or previously attained grades
  • Examples of work
  • References
  • Relevant work experience

Applicants may also be asked to complete a written exercise and/or attend an interview.

Where conditional offers are made, typical offers will be set between:

  • A Level: BBC – BCC
  • BTEC: DMM - MMM

Equivalent qualifications will also be accepted. For information on equivalency please visit their website.

  • Unconditional offers will be reserved for exceptional applicants who demonstrate their ability through examples of previous work and/or attainment in previous academic study.
  • All applicants must be able to demonstrate English language at level B2, equivalent to grade C at GCSE.
  • Applicants without formal qualifications or who have achieved academic qualifications lower than the typical conditional offer may be considered on the strength of relevant prior learning and experience, demonstrated through an interview, written exercise and portfolio of work.
  • If you have / are going to take an IELTS exam, the minimum level is 6.0 (with 5.5 in every category). Only IELTS Academic tests will be accepted. If you are an international student applying for a Tier 4 visa, you must have an IELTS UKVI Academic test.
  • International applicants should check minimum academic requirements for entry by using our partner University’s guide.
  • Successful completion of a CertHE or DipHE programme delivered at Point Blank would precipitate entry at level 5 or 6 on the BA programme. Students who have previously completed a qualification at level 4 or 5 may also be eligible to start the programme at a different entry point.
  • Places are limited and offers cannot be made to all applicants.
