Since its establishment in London in 1994, Point Blank has taught over 50,000 students worldwide the creative process of making music. It now has campuses in London, Los Angeles, China, Ibiza, Mumbai and also offers courses online.

The award-winning school was voted Independent HE Provider of the Year in the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2018, and it came second in 2019. Also in 2019, Point Blank was awarded Silver TEF recognition for excellence in HE teaching.

They offer the following undergraduate courses in their London School:

  • BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering
  • BA (Hons) Music Production & DJ Practice
  • BA (Hons) Music Industry Management

Both Music Production courses come with either 2-year or 3-year study options. All degrees are validated and awarded by Middlesex University. The School also offers Foundation Year courses and two-year DipHE diplomas, along with a selection of shorter courses. All courses are taught by experienced professionals in the school’s state-of-the-art music studios, which come complete with industry standard equipment from Native Instruments and Pioneer DJ.

Notable Alumni include X Factor winner, Leona Lewis, DJ Pete Tong and DJ/Radio Presenter, Gemma Cairney.

Point Blank makes full use of its excellent links within the music industry. Through the school’s connections, students have gained access to internships and jobs at internationally renowned organisations including Defected, Tape London, BBC Radio 1Xtra and Rinse FM.

Their in-house record label - Point Blank Recordings - provides a unique platform for students, offering exposure to their 2 million-plus audience and distribution across all major services including iTunes, Spotify, YouTube and Amazon. Students have seen their music picked up by Kiss FM and BBC Introducing through the label.

Point Blank offers a range of BA (Hons) Degree programmes, including Music Production & Sound Engineering, Music Industry Management and Music Production & DJ Practice, all of which are taught at their London facilities.

Point Blank’s BA (Hons) Music Production & Sound Engineering degree is also available via their online school. This degree features 1-2-1 personal tuition through Point Blank’s unique Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and feedback on your tracks from professional producers.

Point Blank’s lecturers are carefully selected to ensure they are active, credible and highly experienced professionals from every area of the music industry. Extensive 1-2-1 time is given on the courses to ensure plenty of guidance for students through the practical steps needed to find success in the music industry.

Point Blank’s degree courses in London and online are validated, awarded and quality assured by Middlesex University.

Point Blank has no official Student Union, but students do have access to a range of resources to aid and support student life, as well as collaborate and socialise with fellow students. This includes an official Student Council, regular student socials and a private Facebook group. There is additionally a pub across the road from the main campus where many school social events take place.

Point Blank is one of the only schools in the UK with a 48-channel SSL Duality Delta SuperAnalogue™ console. The facilities also feature 12 professional studios for teaching, as well as 5 additional recording studios that students are able to book at any time as part of their course, in order to work on their assignments. The central Hub area also ensures that students across all courses - including music production, radio and singing - can network and collaborate on site.

The DJ Studio is supported by Pioneer DJ and features the latest equipment including CDJ2000nxs, DJM2000nxs, DDJ-SX controllers, PLX-1000 turntables and more. You can take a photo tour of the London studios here. Additional studios are fully equipped and supported by Ableton and Native Instruments.

Students on all degree programmes have access to Point Blank’s award-winning online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), where they can access course notes, instructional videos, student announcements and more. Students of the online degree use the VLE as the main platform to access their tuition and interact with instructors, as well as other students.

Based in Hoxton, Point Blank is in the centre of hip East London. There are many independent record and fashion shops plus clubs, bars, cafes and a thriving live music scene. The nearest overground station is Hoxton, while Old Street tube is a 10-minute walk away, with excellent transport connections.

Students at Point Blank enjoy a highly active student community, benefitting from a range of regular student events and socials. These are all advertised through the Point Blank online community, Plugged In.

These socials include a bi-weekly ‘open mic’ night, held every other Wednesday at The Stag’s Head on Orsman Road, Hoxton. Students are given the opportunity to perform live in front of an audience and established industry figures. Regular socials and events are also hosted by students, with further opportunities to perform live and meet fellow classmates.

Point Blank also host regular Ableton User Groups and bi-monthly Native Instrument Meetup events at their London school, giving students additional opportunities to meet new people, share knowledge, ideas and get up-to-date with the latest in music technology.

Point Blank fosters an environment where students feel welcomed and supported throughout their studies. To this end, all Point Blank degree courses feature 1-2-1 sessions and in-depth regular feedback on students’ work.

Point Blank also provide a range of support to enrolled students who have specific learning difficulties and disabilities, including a student counsellor on site. Specific examples of support and adjustments on offer include:

Point Blank is committed to making music education accessible to people of all backgrounds, offering a range of scholarships, bursaries, funds and grants to support this commitment. These include the following:

HIGHER EDUCATION BURSARY (LONDON)

Available to applicants to any 3 year degree programmes at Point Blank’s London school. It is worth £3,000 per year (£9,000 in total), subtracted from Point Blank’s tuition fees.

HIGHER EDUCATION BURSARY (ONLINE)

The Higher Education Bursary (Online) is available to applicants to Point Blank’s degree programme via the Online school. It is worth £5,995 per year (£17,985 in total). This means all tuition fees are waived and students are given free software to complete their course.

PB PRODUCER SCHOLARSHIP (LONDON)

PB Producer Scholarships are worth £3,000 in total and are available for any 3 year BA (Hons) programme delivered at Point Blank’s London campus.

HARDSHIP SUPPORT FUND (LONDON & ONLINE)

This fund provides financial support to a select number of current students who have met unforeseen financial hardship during their studies. The maximum award is £1,000 per year.

MUSIC INDUSTRY SCHOLARSHIPS (ALL SCHOOLS)

The Music Industry Scholarship is worth the value of one module to be used at any of Point Blank’s schools, around the world or online. This will be awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding potential in music who are in need of financial assistance.

EX-ANIMO FOUNDATION GRANT (ALL SCHOOLS)

The Ex-Animo Foundation promotes the advancement of education among young people in the creative arts. There is a total fund of £1,500 available each year for current Point Blank students to purchase equipment while studying with them.

Point Blank Music School has been awarded a Teaching Excellence Framework Year Two Provisional award.

Point Blank Music School won the 'Best Independent HE' category at the What Uni Awards in 2018 and came second this year. Point Blank is recognised as a world leader in Music Production courses, Sound Engineering courses, DJ courses and related creative media studies.

They have been teaching the art of music production since 1994 with over 50,000 students learning how to produce music, DJ professionally, broadcast radio shows, sing and manage careers in the music industry in their state-of-the-art facilities in London, Los Angeles, Ibiza, Mumbai and online.

In the latest National Student Survey (NSS), Point Blank scored 100% for student satisfaction in their HE courses, including online degrees.

Entry requirements

The following guidelines are designed to orientate you through entry on to a Higher Education course at Point Blank. If you would like to apply, please visit their website. 

Point Blank are looking for people who can demonstrate a) their passion for music and b) an ability to successfully complete a Higher Education programme.

This will initially be assessed through your personal statement which should include any previous study or relevant experience in music. The Admissions Team will look at the merits of each applicant, taking the following evidence into consideration:

  • Personal statement
  • Predicted or previously attained grades
  • Examples of work
  • References
  • Relevant work experience

Applicants may also be asked to complete a written exercise and/or attend an interview.

Where conditional offers are made, typical offers will be set between:

  • A Level: BBC – BCC
  • BTEC: DMM - MMM

Equivalent qualifications will also be accepted. For information on equivalency please visit their website.

  • Unconditional offers will be reserved for exceptional applicants who demonstrate their ability through examples of previous work and/or attainment in previous academic study.
  • All applicants must be able to demonstrate English language at level B2, equivalent to grade C at GCSE.
  • Applicants without formal qualifications or who have achieved academic qualifications lower than the typical conditional offer may be considered on the strength of relevant prior learning and experience, demonstrated through an interview, written exercise and portfolio of work.
  • If you have / are going to take an IELTS exam, the minimum level is 6.0 (with 5.5 in every category). Only IELTS Academic tests will be accepted. If you are an international student applying for a Tier 4 visa, you must have an IELTS UKVI Academic test.
  • International applicants should check minimum academic requirements for entry by using our partner University’s guide.
  • Successful completion of a CertHE or DipHE programme delivered at Point Blank would precipitate entry at level 5 or 6 on the BA programme. Students who have previously completed a qualification at level 4 or 5 may also be eligible to start the programme at a different entry point.
  • Places are limited and offers cannot be made to all applicants.
