The Students’ Union at Plymouth Marjon exists for a number of reasons. It is primarily an organisation that ensures all students are represented equally and fairly, offering advice to anyone who feels they are struggling with their course for a personal, academic or other reason.
The SU is staffed by three permanent members and a number of part-time volunteers. These positions are filled during student elections, ensuring students have a say in the people representing them and their needs. The SU is independent from the university and will act as a representative of students if they need to dispute something with the university or on any other matters.
The Students’ Union also organises various social events throughout the year, and runs the clubs and societies at the university, ensuring students have ample opportunity to unwind and meet new friends.
Students are encouraged to take a look at the wide range of clubs and societies offered by Plymouth Marjon’s Students’ Union. These give students the opportunity to meet new people and make friends, and also unwind – downtime is an essential part of a healthy student lifestyle.
There are many different societies available to choose from, covering topical interests, backgrounds or just hobbies. Students are also welcome to start their own society with the SU’s support. Starting a society not only helps students to find like-minded people to connect with, but also looks great on a CV when applying for jobs in the future.
Alongside the societies, there are various sporting clubs open to join, from the more traditional athletics, basketball and swimming to more niche activities such as cheerleading. As well as being fantastic for socialising, these help students find a productive way to keep fit around their studies.
The university’s campus is situated a little outside the centre of Plymouth, close to Dartmoor National Park. The regular bus service means it offers all the benefits of a campus university, close to some stunning countryside, but with all the amenities of a city just an easy and short journey away.
Plymouth is sometimes referred to as Britain’s Ocean City, with a fantastic and thriving waterfront and the incredible beaches (and associated water sports) of Devon and Cornwall in close proximity.
The waterfront is a hub of activity, including some fantastic restaurants to suit all budgets – even a student one. And while the city and the region comes to life during the warmer months when surfing and sailing is at its peak, there’s plenty to enjoy there during the cooler months too, including art galleries, theatre, cinema and the excellent Drake Circus Shopping Centre.
Anyone who enjoys a night out will find plenty of bars and clubs to choose from, ranging from real ale taverns to dance clubs and live music venues. The Plymouth Pavilions hosts regular concerts and comedy nights also.
