The Northumbria Students’ Union has a mission statement that is to have “a positive impact on the lives of all our students”. As such, it works to ensure that all aspects of student life are enriched.
The NSU has facilities at all four campuses, including bars and places to eat as well as representation services that can answer questions on courses, student life and more. The NSU has over 130 societies catering to all manner of interests, sports and hobbies, and there are some excellent volunteering opportunities too.
The Northumbria Students’ Union is run by students, known as Sabbatical Officers. These are elected by students to represent the whole student body on a range of university issues.
The NSU consists of workspaces and meeting rooms, support services, bars, clubs, entertainment venues, coffee shops and more, all run by a qualified team who are dedicated to making the student experience the best it can be.
Northumbria University students on Whatuni say:
“Student representation is great lots of surveys and updates from well known and seen reps. Facilities are good, a restaurant and clearly marked rooms for a variety of uses.”
“Wide representation. Fits many needs, if they don't have something they plan on ensuring they do have it. Great diversity and facilities are well maintained.”
The NSU has over 130 clubs and societies that students can enjoy, ranging from mainstream sports to niche interests. There’s something for absolutely everyone and the university encourages students to join societies and make new friends.
Students are also welcome to set up new societies themselves, for any shared interests not currently covered.
The university and Students’ Union offer a number of volunteering opportunities for students, ranging from developing sport in Zambia to helping to run a local animal shelter.
Northumbria University students on Whatuni say:
“There is quite a variety of societies at Northumbria Uni, that can appeal to a wide range of demographics.”
Northumbria’s City Campus is located right at the heart of Newcastle, regularly considered to be one of the most popular and best cities for university study in the UK by Whatuni in 2020. The city is bustling but compact, meaning everything is within easy reach and there’s a true community vibe.
The Newcastle nightlife is famous for its variety and quality, while shopping is excellent either around the busy Northumberland Street, the Eldon Square shopping centre or, across the Tyne in Gateshead, the Metrocentre, one of the largest indoor shopping centres in Europe.
Students will find that Newcastle is a city enamoured with sport, and in particular football – St James’ Park, home of Newcastle United, is famously right at the centre of the city and can be seen (and heard) from most streets. The city also has Kingston Park, home of the Falcons rugby union team, and the Newcastle Eagles basketball team play at the Community Arena.
The city is served by a Metro train, which also visits the coast – South Shields, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth have a host of seaside attractions. Further north, students can enjoy rambling walks through Northumberland, while Hadrian’s Wall is easily reached.
Northumbria University students on Whatuni say:
“The university is in a perfect location as it’s only a 5 minute walk from my accommodation and there is plenty shops placed around the university buildings. It is also only a 5ish minute walk from uni to town, and a 15ish minute walk to the train station which is ideal for easy commuting. Everything is also accessible in one main area, there is nowhere that I have to travel to within uni that is more than a 5 minute walk from another place, making getting to lectures, etc. very easy.”
“My university is located in the centre of Newcastle, close to the metro. It is very close to the most important streets with lots of shops and businesses. It is very well located. My accommodation is 20 minutes away for it, however, Northumbria has several Halls on campus that students can choose from.”
“Yes the university is in a great location as it’s very close to my accommodation and town centre. You can get anywhere pretty much at close proximity!”
