LJMU considers a wide range of qualifications for applications to its undergraduate courses. Acceptable qualifications include A / AS levels, Access award diplomas and extended diplomas, BTEC Nationals and OCR Nationals, International Baccalaureates, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diplomas, Irish Leaving Certificates, Open University courses and the Advanced Diploma and Cambridge Pre-U.
Prospective students who wish to study at Liverpool John Moores University should be able to demonstrate a minimum level of numeracy and literacy via a Grade C / Grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths and English or an equivalent qualification.

There is a range of accommodation options for students to choose from, and all student accommodation is located within an easy walking distance of the university’s facilities.

LJMU provides state-of-the-art facilities for all its students. The university has two well-equipped libraries and an additional 24/7 digital library.
LJMU’s flagship development at Copperas Hill houses the cutting-edge Student Life Building and Sports Building. Located in the heart of Liverpool’s city centre, the five-story Student Life Building offers a range of student-facing services. The two-story Sports Building has outstanding facilities which include an eight-court sports hall and state-of-the-art gym.
There are a range of subject specific facilities which replicate real work environments to prepare students for future success in industry. There are clinical practice suites for nursing, midwifery and paramedic students, and the UK’s only 360-degree ship simulator at The LJMU Maritime Centre.

Liverpool John Moores University takes great care in ensuring that its students are supported throughout their academic journey. A dedicated student advice and wellbeing team are always on hand to give advice and guidance to students.
Mental health and student wellbeing services are available to students from all backgrounds, and there is support in place for disabled students. Additional guidance is offered from the student advice and wellbeing team on everything from financial management and student funding to accommodation.
There is a dedicated money advice team at the university, who are on hand to assist students who are facing financial hardship. This friendly and responsive team is on-hand to offer advice and assistance to students who need help covering cover bills, food costs and other forms of financial hardship.
In the academic year of 2022/23, the money advice team assisted over 1,700 students in financial hardship, with financial support averaging around £890 per application. Over the course of the last academic year, the university committed over £2.2 million to support its students throughout the cost-of-living crisis with a specialised student support fund.

The university is recognised for excellence in numerous fields, with the LJMU Pharmacy School particularly known for producing top graduates. It is one of the UK’s oldest pharmacy departments, with courses accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council.
The School of Sport and Exercise Science has established itself globally as one of the best schools in its field. LJMU, which launched the world’s first degree in sport science in 1975, has risen to be rated sixth globally for Sport and Exercise Science (QS Rankings, 2024). Additionally, research in this field is rated 96.2% ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally-excellent’ in the Research Excellence Framework 2021, which places LJMU 2nd in the UK for ‘research power’ – combining research quality with the amount of research it performs.
LJMU also opened England’s first mechanics’ institute in 1823, which taught mechanics, arithmetic, and engineering craftsmanship. In 1892, the university made history again and opened England’s first nautical college. Today, the School of Engineering draws on this rich history to produce ground-breaking research, with 95.8% of its research output rated as world-leading or internationally excellent (REF, 2021).
LJMU’s students’ union represents and supports students throughout their time at the university, with student wellbeing, inclusivity, and enjoyment at the forefront of its culture. The SU runs regular, affordable events throughout the year in multiple venues across the city.

Students at the university are assisted in starting up their own business with LJMU’s Startup Hub. The hub supports students and graduates to found and grow businesses and establish themselves as freelancers. Additionally, the specialised careers, employability and enterprise team offer a range of services to aid students career development, including one-to-one appointments with career advisers. A huge range of digital careers, employability and enterprise-focused tools and resources are also available via LJMU’s Careers Zones 24/7 platform.
Unitemps is LJMU’s very own on-campus recruitment agency, based in the Student Life Building. The agency provides students with the opportunity to find flexible, paid part-time work, and supports recent graduates in finding permanent roles, including roles within LJMU itself and elsewhere across the local region.
Liverpool John Moores University offers a range of inclusive scholarships and funding opportunities to support students from diverse backgrounds.
The LJMU Bursary of £500 is automatically paid to eligible students on an annual basis. Students automatically qualify for the bursary if they have a household income of £25,000 a year or less, meet the residence requirements for student funding, and are paying the annual maximum university tuition fee.
Scholarships of up to £5,000 a year are awarded to undergraduate students via the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to remarkable students who represent the diverse and talented LJMU student body. Opportunity Scholarships are open to all UK or ROI students from a black, Asian or minority ethnic group each year with £1,000 made available to students each year for the duration of their course.
Additional scholarships are offered by the university and include the Community Excellence Scholarship, the Academic Excellence Scholarship, and the £5,000 Sir Bert Massie Scholarship for disabled students who have campaigned for inclusion or championed inclusion in some way.
