The Goldsmiths Students' Union (SU) is an independent student-run organisation which operates as the university's representational body, with the core aim of connecting each student to the wider Goldsmiths community. They achieve this through initiating campaigns, organising activities and events, and coordinating the university’s many clubs and special interest societies.
The SU team is comprised of full-time elected Sabbatical Officers and members of staff, as well as part-time Officers and Student Staff members. New students are able to get involved with the running of the SU itself, taking on positions of responsibility which can enhance their resumé and provide an opportunity to contribute to the Goldsmiths' student culture.
The SU have their own café and bar, which serves as a hub of student activity, and a venue to host many events within their annual program. The SU received praiseworthy reviews by students in the most recent survey, and participants were particularly impressed by the campaigns that the team had led throughout the year.
Students at Goldsmiths are encouraged to get involved in the many extra-curricular activities organised by the SU and the huge selection of clubs and special interest societies which the SU co-ordinates.
Clubs and societies are a great place for new students to meet people outside of classes, to develop a new skill or pursue a particular interest with like-minded people. The university supports a wide range of sports teams, giving students the opportunity to train with each other, and to represent Goldsmiths by competing with teams from other universities based in London, or further afield.
The university also hosts a large number of journalism and media outlets, which give opportunities for budding writers to publish their work and get feedback from their peers.
The university encourages the formation of new clubs and societies where they do not already exist, and enterprising students may turn to the SU for guidance in setting these up or to find help with funding. Some of the current clubs and societies include:
London is frequently voted the best city in the world to experience as a student and it is easy to see why. There are boundless opportunities to immerse in the history, culture and atmosphere of this remarkably diverse and cosmopolitan modern capital, and Goldsmiths' students are well-placed to take advantage of their surroundings.
New Cross plays host to a thriving arts and music scene, with a vibrant landscape of exhibitions, live music and pop-up events throughout the year. The area also supports a diverse array of cafés, restaurants and food markets, with many kinds of world cuisine within a short walk from campus. The local nightlife is also worth exploring. There are plenty of pubs, clubs and comedy venues to keep students entertained long into the night.
The area is well serviced by local transport networks and students can take advantage of discounted Underground and Overground rail and bus passes to save money while travelling to attractions within the city. Other student-friendly areas within a short bus journey of campus include Peckham, Shoreditch, Camberwell, Deptford, and Greenwich.
