Bangor University achieved a Gold Award for ‘outstanding teaching’ in the national Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
Based between the mountains and the sea in north Wales, Bangor University has around 10,000 students studying a wide range of subjects including Accounting & Finance, Forestry and Conservation, Psychology, Law, Music, Ocean Sciences, English Literature and Language, Medical Sciences, Nursing, and Zoology.
Bangor University came within the top 10 in the University of the Year category at the 2019 Whatuni Student Choice Awards, and this success is reflected in comments left by our student reviewers, many of whom have nothing but great things to say about their entire time studying at Bangor.
Bangor students on Whatuni say:
“ONCE IN A LIFETIME. Amazing course, amazing location. Incredible lecturers, incredible facilities. Honestly don't know what else you could want. If you want a university that gives you everything you could possibly need to prepare you for the future then Bangor is the best place for you.”
“Absolutely banging - I made friends easily, found some societies I loved and continue to go to them, and am enjoying my lectures also! Although there isn't much to do in the town, the nightlife is fantastic as is the surrounding scenery. I couldn't ask for a more beautiful place to study.”
“I have really enjoyed the course, the city and the people i've met. The atmosphere in such a beautiful place is something you can't replicate. This isn't for you if you want 'hustle and bustle', but perfect for someone that wants to feel like they're on holiday every moment they're at uni.”
Bangor’s Skills & Employability Service provides workshops, online resources and advice to help you prepare for your future career. All undergraduates can take part in the Bangor Employability Award. This gives you accreditation for both co and extra-curricular activities. This can be for things like work experience, volunteering, taking part in a club or society, undertaking part-time work or even learning a new language.
A new initiative, offered to all undergraduate students who begin their course from September 2019, is a voluntary two-week (70 hours minimum) work placement in Year 2, or a voluntary Work Placement Year, which is a year out between Years 2 and 3 of their degree.
Students will be supported throughout this period by a dedicated member of staff and this experience will be recognized appropriately. Those taking the voluntary two-week work placement will have the opportunity to include it in their HEAR document and those taking the voluntary year out option will have ‘with work placement’ added to their degree title.
At Bangor most Undergraduate students can choose to go abroad for a full year, a short period over the summer or, in some cases, just a semester. Students can choose to undertake an International Experience Year to work or study at any point during their degree. Once you successfully complete your year abroad, you have ‘with International Experience’ added to the title of your degree.
The fact that Bangor’s Skills & Employability Service is well regarded by students and mentioned positively in their reviews – particularly about the level of training and support on offer.
The University has placed in the top ten for job prospects in the Whatuni Student Choice Awards for the last two years, and student reviewers told us they’re feeling incredibly positive about their futures due to the regular support they’ve been given.
Bangor students on Whatuni say:
"We have employability sessions to help us understand how to approach employers. Examples used in these sessions are real-life scenarios, which helps us understand exactly how it is in the 'real world'. CV-writing sessions are held to help with curating a good CV.”
“We have many optional lectures throughout the year that offer guidance on many different careers as well as general information on day to day issues that occur across most jobs. We also have the Bangor Employability Award, which allows students to undergo certain tasks to make them a more employable candidate.”
“The university has plenty of opportunities for students to attend workshops and other events, such as the International Women's Day event, where leading women in the university talk about their jobs, how they got there and how to choose the right path for you.”
There are hundreds of courses to choose from at Bangor University from the Arts and Sciences. Nine programmes recently received 100% student satisfaction rate in the 2019 NSS with Ocean Science and Forestry currently ranked 1st in the UK.
Bangor’s courses and lecturers are very highly rated by our reviewers for their passion and knowledge. They’re especially praised for their availability away from the lecture halls and how easy it is to get further help and advice from them.
Bangor students on Whatuni say:
“I don't have any complaints about the way my course is taught. The tutors are great, they make it exciting and fun to learn and are very caring about their students. They make sure you understand and encourage questions where you don't.”
“The course is excellent in all terms and there is nothing I don’t like about it. The lecturers are amazing and helpful. The lectures are fantastic. The course content is very rich making it an excellent opportunity to learn new things every week.”
Student membership of the Students’ Union’s clubs and societies is free. There are over 200 clubs and societies to join, taking in everything from sporting groups to academic and interest groups.
The Students’ Union plays a large role in helping students to settle when they arrive and organise a range of activities, including Serendipity, the Clubs and Societies Fair, to welcome new students. The union also organises events throughout the year such as the canine calming room, meet and mingle and De-Stresstival!
Bangor Students’ Union is run by five full-time officers backed up by a team professional staff, it’s their job to be the voice of students at Bangor Uni, making sure their needs are met.
Our student reviewers seem really happy with the SU, particularly the hands on and supportive approach taken to clubs and societies, the regular events arranged throughout the year and their friendliness to students who need help or advice.
Bangor students on Whatuni say:
“The students union is fantastic, I especially love our "de -stresstivals". One of the activities is petting and looking after guide dogs which has helped my friends and I relax so many times- you can't go wrong with a Labrador.”
“The Student Union at Bangor Uni is great. They always have new events in the pipeline, and even offer free tea and coffee to students so that we can chill and chat for a while before we go back to studying or lectures.”
“Our student union is great! They're always hosting fun and helpful events. They offer their space up for various society events, helping students get involved in new things. I often attend different student union events.”
All first year students that put Bangor down as their firm choice and apply within the given timeframe are guaranteed university accommodation.
The Bangor halls for undergraduate students are on the Ffriddoedd Village and the St Mary's Village. Both are within walking distance of the university and the centre of Bangor. All accommodation is self-catered, rent includes all bills and both villages have on-site security available 24 hours a day.
One of the perks of living in the university’s accommodation is that you’ll also receive gym and Campus Life membership included in the price, something which many student reviewers took full advantage of and loved having.
Students are full of praise for these student homes, regularly mentioning how spacious it is, the affordability, how safe they felt and the sense of community that was around them. In fact, students rated the housing so highly, the university came within the top 3 in the accommodation category at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2019.
Bangor students on Whatuni say:
“The accommodation is amazing, I have a large kitchen and the rooms are very spacious to my surprise. The bathrooms are a perfect size and the security to the room are great, so no unwanted people can get it.”
“It’s awesome! We have weekly cleaners that come and do up our kitchen for us. And having a private bathroom is a life saver. I paid slightly extra for a MASSIVE room. Couldn’t be any happier with my living situation this term.”
“It is modern and spacious, well kept buildings and clean. There is plenty of storage in the kitchen and own rooms and all bills are provided for.”
The University has a range of facilities, both for academic and social sides of student life.
The library in particular got positive comments from student reviewers, who loved the range of study spaces that catered for both individual and group study. This includes collaborative work areas, social areas, quiet study areas and meeting rooms. The library also has a variety of learning resources, including an extensive collection of books and journals; over 1000 computers and 24-hour access PC rooms.
Bangor has its own research vessel the ‘Prince Madog’, state of the art science labs, an fMRI Scanner and exercise physiology testing and rehabilitation research laboratories.
The University is continuously investing in their facilities, including the Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre, and improved sports facilities amongst developments. The University’s sports facilities were commonly mentioned by students, and the recently refurbished main Sports Centre, Canolfan Brailsford contains state of the art equipment including a fitness room with over 50 machines, a spin studio, strength & conditioning equipment, squash & tennis courts, climbing wall, indoor & outdoor courts & pitches including the new IRB and FIFA standard 3G pitch.
Bangor students on Whatuni say:
“The university facilities are way beyond than I had expected. Everything is taken very good care of due to which there is nothing that is not available e.g, the printers. The electronic doors are an excellent feature. Also the electronic key card facilities for student halls provides a safe environment.”
“There is plenty available, in campus there is everything you need a well-equipped gym, a shop, a cafe a pizzeria and a launderette and if you ever need anything else everything is within 10 min walking distance. The facilities are clean and modern too which gives them a nice feel.”
“The facilities at Bangor University are excellent and very useful. The staff at every office are very helpful. The most exciting feature of this university are the libraries and the amount of scripts and books they store. They are absolutely amazing and well stocked.”
Bangor is one of the UK’s smallest cities - situated between the mountains and the sea, with everything in walking distance. Bangor has the longest High Street in Wales and is consistently rated one of the most affordable places to study.
Academi, the official student nightclub, is a ‘safe space’ club and provides a focus for the night-time entertainment and general socialising.
Bar Uno, situated on the Ffriddoedd student village and Barlow’s, on the St Mary’s Student village are other popular venues for students.
The multi-million pound Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre is the biggest arts and entertainment venue in north-west Wales. Pontio is the base for the Students’ Union and houses a cinema, theatre, studio theatre, lecture theatres, bar and cafe.
Bangor students on Whatuni say:
“Due to the city being a bit smaller, there is very much a community feel as you find it is easy to bump into friends you have made over your time as a student in Bangor. It is also easy to get attached to the city as you get to know everything it has to offer quite well by the end of your student life. It has the Snowdonia National Park and Anglesey right on its door step with great views from Bangor Pier. It has a large amount of pubs and restaurants and also takeaway places.”
“Bangor is small and cosy, yet there are always things going on! The nightlife is good, whether you want to go to a pub or a nightclub, there are loads of nice little cafes and restaurants, four main supermarkets in convenient locations, and you can walk anywhere within maximum half an hour! The city is also located right next to the sea, which is great if you want to go for a walk or even do a bit of work in a relaxing environment. The mountains all around are also just a short bus drive away.”
“Bangor is a small city, so everything is on walking distance. Another great thing about a small city is that you always run into someone you know and it's a very social town. There are some nice pubs and restaurants to go to and the view is amazing: the sea, pier and mountains!”
Bangor University won the award for best Clubs and Societies at the 2019 WhatUni Student Choice Awards, taking home this title for the third year running.
There are over 200 student-run clubs and societies to choose from, and student reviewers were particularly impressed by the fact membership of clubs and societies is entirely free, making it really easy for everybody to get involved!
Students are encouraged to join as many clubs & societies as they like and if there is nothing suitable then students can create their own with the backing of the Students Union.
Bangor students on Whatuni say:
“The societies are fantastic - there are so many to choose from and are all very inclusive. A lot of time and effort has gone into all the societies and they are very well looked after. They're also free, which is quite unique.”
“All FREE!!!! Super great. Everyone is inclusive and helpful. Society fair allows you to scout out your favourites and choose.”
“Amazing - the biggest asset to the uni. Huge range of clubs, all of which are free!”
Bangor University was rated in the top 10 in the UK for Student Support in the 2019 WhatUni Student Choice Awards. Bangor’s support services are highly appreciated by students. The Student Services Centre looks after financial help, counselling, assistance for dyslexic and disabled students and advice on housing, while the Study Skills Centre offers one-to-one help and workshops to ease you through your studies. You’ll also be given a Peer Guide - a second or third year student who can show you the ropes.
Our reviewers have highlighted the level of support available for students who may be suffering from anxiety and depression – an issue of growing importance at universities.
Bangor students on Whatuni say:
“The support system is extensive, and there is always more than one person to turn to with any issues, everyone is eager to help. Each school provides a tutor to each student (as a joint honours I have 2), but also the lecturers are always happy to help. The university also provides counselling in all major areas (such as career, financial, mental health).”
“Many options are available for personal support, with nightline and student counselling, meaning if you have any issues there's always someone to talk to, same with the tutors, they are always there to listen to both academic and personal issues.”
“The support of Bangor University is fantastic. I'm an international student, so I had some questions about arranging my modules, finding a doctor etc. I went to the International Office. The employees of the International Office are very kind and always open to help you. The uni gives you a comforting feeling to ask questions.”
