The annual Whatuni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs) highlight the incredible work carried out by institutions for their students. Due to Covid restrictions, this year’s awards were not collected on uni campuses as usual, but instead based on submissions from institutions, which were then judged by our special student panel.

OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.

I have enjoyed my university experience so far, I am a people’s person so front the very start I have been social, interactive with others and supportive to flatmates and course peers. I have enjoyed being away from home and learning life skills that you don’t get in any other experiences and I hope this continues throughout my whole university course

Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?

There are many different events that the uni hold where people from companies come in to talk about employment or actually help students create their own CV’s as well as looking at job applications

Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?

I think the way my course is run is great, one of the reasons for this is that it’s spread out between having practical learning skills being taught as well as learning the academic writing side to the course. This gives it a nice balance between heavy work and practical work which I find important to keep students interested. A downfall on the way the course is run is the hours, there aren’t many days where I am in all day everyday, to some students this is a bonus, but having 2/3 days off a week and not starting at the same time and finishing at the same time each day can become tricky when trying to time manage and get into a daily routine

How many contact hours per week do you have?

Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?

I think at Worcester the student union works really hard to get all students involved. Whether that be pushing societies for people to join or putting on events at the student bar, it may not be the most glamorous or appealing places to hang out for typical students but it is certainly a key meeting point for those who want a quiet drink or to socialise, there are even places to have a sit down with course mates to discuss and potential group work that needs to be planned

Accommodation
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?

I am a very social person, so being around students who are going through the same journey as you are helps when you have your down days. It’s not just about academic education at uni but you’re also learning about life skills which arguably are just as important

Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?

I believe that the universities facilities are great. The campus isn’t very big but it is ideal to get from one side to the other without any thoughts about rushing as everything seems to be accessible quickly

Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?

I enjoy Worcester City life, coming from a big city such as Birmingham I am use to heavy crowds coming in and out of the city on an hourly basis, in Worcester even though the city is filled with bars and restaurants it’s a much calmer environment and you feel a lot safer roaming the streets no matter what time of day/night it is

Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?

I am not part of a society at the uni, but from what I’ve heard from other people they are a great way to make friends, do sports or activities that you love and be able to have that pride that you are representing your university in events

Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).

I believe that University of Worcester tries it’s very best to deliver an enormous amount of help to students who are desperately reaching out for it, whether that be assignment based or if they are struggling financially or emotionally. There are many different people at the uni that offer help and I think that’s a really important thing to focus on

Course was good, very informative and helped me prepare well for becoming a PE teacher. The support was there when I needed on multiple issues that I faced. The sessions we did at uni came into practice when I was at placement and when visiting me at placement the feedback was detailed

Although being in a pandemic has certainly made my second year at university a lot different to what I originally expected, the University of Worcester have made me feel supported along the way regardless. The campus facilities have always been good to go and study in, there’s a wide range of help available and my course, Law LLB, has been amazing despite everything. My lecturers have been really supportive but also delivered content on time and clearly despite everything being online. There is always enough time for them to help me and overall my whole experience has been positive.

I have enjoyed every module and the support offered, it has been intellectually challenging with lots of support where I have needed it. I have gotten involved with multiple societies which has been very beneficial, and supported with mock interviews to get a graduate job.

Limited online contact time, too few lectures but lots of online group work. That hasn’t worked well, people feel uncomfortable, don’t have a suitable environment to participate from, poor internet etc. High staff turnover and absences of staff since starting the course is concerning.

Amazing students' union. Some amazing tutors, some have not adapted well to online learning though with technical issues causes lots of disruptions and disengaged learning. Some tutors have been lacking with assignment support. Amazing well-being support and academic support options.

The University has been very supportive and responsive during this period. All students have PATs that they can discuss any University related concerns. Firstpoint is another resource available to students to help with any concern, needs or just someone to help steer you in the direction of assistance that you need.

I feel that, although majority has been online, most lecturers have adapted well to this approach and have managed to make the experience as engaging and as “normal” as possible

A lack of respect and academic integrity left me feeling like a customer more than a student. Being provided the bare minimum product throughout second and third year, just to satisfy governmental requirements. I have had no communication from my course since our last lecture, with no goodbye message and no discussions about what comes next. Some lecturers were amazing and instilled enthusiasm for the subjects while others dismissed all interaction and opted to play pre-recorded sessions. And then have the audacity to state that we had it better off this year due to being able to watch the recordings again. The way online teaching was handled made me want to drop out several times and if not for the provision of mental health services I would have.

Some modules handled the online learning better than others - overall I am content with content delivery though. Sports clubs and the SU have been a slight let down though. I'm also disappointed that I've paid a few months of rent whilst I wasn't living in the house -so that's some money I'm not seeing again. COVID relief funds by the SU were also rather bias - aka if you were in your overdraft (probably due to reckless spending) then you'd be granted money which I though was unfair for students struggling or who had reasonably used their money. I don't think my academic year was 100% worth what I have paid for, but I highly doubt I'm seeing that money again either.
