The annual Whatuni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs) highlight the incredible work carried out by institutions for their students. Due to Covid restrictions, this year’s awards were not collected on uni campuses as usual, but instead based on submissions from institutions, which were then judged by our special student panel.

Timetable could be better and rooms are always too cold or warm
The online delivery affected this year experience quite badly, especially at the beginning. We were told we would have switched to a mixed delivery many times but this never happened and created a lot of confusion on what we were expected to do. However, when in second semester became clear this wouldn’t have happened my experience improved a lot. Lecturers and tutors got used to the online delivery, as we did, and it became easier to understand the requirements and the assignments.
I haven’t used the graduate career service yet, but I had one session to help me out writing my CV and that was super helpful. It can be booked ahead and they give you many advices on how to improve or write your CV/cover letter. It helped me a lot cause as an international student I wasn’t sure of the UK curriculum standards.
Despite this year was completed fully online, lecturers were able to deliver it in an engaging way, alternating lectures with tutorials and laboratories. The tutors are all very approachable and happy to help students.
The buildings are all quite accessible, even if some of them are old and therefore not built for people with disabilities working have been done to fix this. The library is a 10/10, plenty of facilities and with staff there to help you out using them.
I think the personal services are good overall, but not advertised enough, therefore I often find myself asking my tutor who I should contact for different services as I am not sure who the right person is.
Definitely room for improvement but comparing to nanyang technological university where I studied on my year abroad and is ranked top 10 in the world, the quality of the whole course delivery especially regarding the pre-COVID years is very high. Professors in Singapore look up to Strathclyde academically and follow Strathclyde leadership. The course here is very practical and applicable to the current job market, it’s not a traditional textbook taught course like what I experienced in Singapore
Everyone that does engineering at strath has amazing job prospects after you graduate and everyone in my year has either had internships or got one this summer
Some classes were taught very well online, such as materials and computer aided design engineering. The project for the dissertation was very tough online however with not having access to fast computers in the library and having to use personal laptops. Our exam timetable was absolutely horrendous and very unfair, with final exams for major classes (heat and flow and engineering materials selection) the day before and after the dissertation deadline, which was very unnecessary and could of been avoided since it was online, which put undue stress on us students. The stress put on us by the uni was unbearable at times, and even when we politely asked for the dates to be spread out better, there was a blanket refusal with no explanation of justification. I used to love my course and uni before COVID and now I absolutely hate it and can’t wait to see the back of it 👍 oh and Strathclyde released one of our final exam marks early, where some people saw their marks but others didn’t, so that’s also just fantastic

I’ve never used any myself but there does seem to be plenty available. Although they haven’t been kind to use this year exam timetable wise, in fact have made it harder for us when we’ve had 0 face to face contact.
Very ranged across course module classes and semesters. I did learn but felt that the amount of effort I was putting in was not equal to other students but I felt less support and at a disadvantage for trying. I think that students did not aid some lectures making it much more challenging g instead of collaborative and beneficial. Some lectures and staff were outstanding and others were bare minimal effort giving.
During Covid Lockdown it was all online. Mix of lectures and seminars/tutorials. Limited contact with tutors and lecturers

Its been overall meh with a lot of added stress due to poor communication. International students have had it the worst as they are paying incredible amounts of money for not a lot of benefits. The uni has required them to remain in the UK just to be met with only online learning.

Studying and the University of Strathclyde has been challenging but rewarding. Staff is knowledgeable and easily approachable, and the facilities are kept very well. Overall, I am proud to be a student in this university and would recommend it to anyone.
Lecturers went above and beyond this year and should be applauded for that. The way the pandemic has been handled by the university is what has resulted in not full marks.
The way this was taught was good and the lecturers really tried to make it engaging etc but the way it was handled by the university was appalling. Students weren’t told by the university if there was a change from blended learning and only found out as a result of a passing comment by a member of faculty during a tutorial.
Wasn’t able to access cause of the lockdown. Made quite difficult as Glasgow was constantly in a higher tier than where I live so wasn’t safe to travel to.
Overall, i feel blessed that i got chance to study at Strathclyde University.i got support from all the staff. Whenever i have asked, a meeting was conducted with me. I was told to share each and every problem. I was supported financially aswell by the University. I received detailed feedback on my assignments, which helped me improve myself further. Whenever i was in stress, i talked to my teachers and they were always there to support me. I encourage everyone to get admission here. I am asking my younger siblings aswell to get admission in this university.

I am being supported at every stage
Felt that this year was quite good under the current circumstances most modules produces high quality online videos, but I do feel like I missed out on a proper uni experience and it defo wasn’t worth £9000.
Overall good — some issues, but I feel these are mostly irrelevant now that my course has been replaced. I do wish journalism had offered placements, for example, to build post-uni relationships. Same can be said for creative writing.
We receive weekly emails on career service resources - cv writing etc. The university has large jobs board that is hard to find, so I do wish they could regularly email with links to it. One really good plus is that after graduating, you have some years of career service support with the uni.
On the English side, texts are always engaging and well considered. Tutors are incredibly helpful and enthusiastic about the courses. In addition to this, they are always interested in our work and provide incredible feedback and encouragement. Online teaching was sometimes a struggle, and we missed the in person classes. One-to-one emails were usually on time, but sometimes delayed. Creative Writing had provided a nurturing environment for students to develop creative skills in various mediums. Students are encouraged to experiment in different forms of writing, and tutors are always supportive and helpful. Feedback is always thorough and well thought out. Online learning was slightly easier ad students were often placed into break out rooms in small groups so that tutors could drop in to manageable numbers and have more in depth conversations, but there was little contact hour allocation due to covid. Journalism in third year was much more enjoyable than years 1/2. Tutors this year were incredibly helpful in terms of resources and feedback. Each idea was discussed and developed with someone who was actually interested in our work. We engaged in amazing conversations about trends, ideas and our work really benefited. Our tutor also regularly checked in on everyones mental health and physical health due to the covid situation, and this made a real difference. However, it also meant we really missed the usual in person classes and contact hours, even with regular email communication.
Uni is always clean, and there are lab rooms throughout for anyone who can’t find space at the library. The new union space promises to be an improvement, but the nourish cafe’s on site are sometimes expensive with little choice. There are independent places near by as alternatives. The uni itself had several buildings with varying degrees of equipment, with Graham Hills and Livingstone Tower being the ones with most access to extra PC’s. It can sometimes be tricky to find laptop charging ports unless you walk to a further building. The library had lots of space, but not every non-pc space had plugs to charge laptops. However the archives and book selection is incredible. Disability access is good, but could be improved, especially in the library. Each building has access to free sanitary products for period-having persons.
This year mental health support has improved in terms of term support. However there are long waiting lists and in general student support could be improved.
