Dreadful course. If you want to do endless, pointless lab reports on water flowing through pipes, or be judged on the aptitude of your group rather than your own, or not have any recourse against GTAs who mark your work, then this is the university for you. The GTAs (graduate teaching assistants) have no clue about the subject, often coming from other STEM field like biology and material science. The coursework make me wish I had never taken the subject. Professors are noticeably hypocritical when assigning work, and commenting on work, if you receive comments at all. Often I feel like they don't really know what they're talking about. We've had many situations where the students have had to unionise against staff. During my time at the University of Manchester, two chemical engineering lecturers have been banned from teaching. Whatever you do, choose a different university.
There are virtually no redeeming qualities about this university. It is an unsafe, toxic, and deeply unsupportive environment for international students, where basic academic integrity and student welfare are consistently ignored. Cheating, plagiarism, and misuse of AI tools like ChatGPT are rampant, yet the administration fails to enforce even minimal standards, allowing dishonesty to flourish unchecked. Group projects are often dominated by a few students, while others contribute little but receive equal credit, fostering resentment and frustration. Student support is shockingly inadequate. Departments such as SOE Wellbeing and other administrative units routinely ignore requests for help, even in cases involving harassment, discrimination, or severe psychological distress. Counseling and mental health services are either inaccessible or dismissive, leaving students to cope entirely on their own. Racism and bias are pervasive. Some professors, including Lee Margets, display overt bias against Indian students, and complaints about discriminatory behaviour are frequently dismissed or minimized. Meanwhile, certain student groups exploit systemic loopholes and receive preferential treatment from teaching assistants via WeChat, gaining advance access to exam content and creating an academically unfair environment. Students who refuse to participate in such practices are left at a severe disadvantage. Beyond academics, the university provides no meaningful support for housing, campus safety, or conflict resolution. Reports of harassment, bullying, or assault even those witnessed by staff or captured on CCTV are often met with token responses such as relocation of the aggressor, rather than proper investigation or disciplinary action. The overall culture is hostile, unethical, and self-serving. Students are expected to navigate high workloads, unfair assessments, and systemic bias with no guidance or protection. The university’s low global ranking is a clear reflection of its weak academic standards, corruption, and failure to safeguard students. In short, this institution is dangerous for international students, academically unreliable, and morally bankrupt. It fails utterly in its obligations to provide a safe, fair, and supportive learning environment.
Best is socials! I’ve joined the swimming club and the team are great, lots of training available with good coaches and fun nights out. I’ve made so many friends. Worst is the food in campus is quite expensive. There are free breakfast schemes sometimes but not enough and the cafes aren’t really subsidised.
I’m really loving the campus so far! One of the prettiest campuses compared to the other UK universities that my friend are enrolled in. I’d say the lecturers I’ve got are either really good or not engaging but I’ve nothing much to say besides this
The diverse community, amazing facilities, and incredible opportunities make it an ideal place to learn and grow. The supportive faculty and vibrant campus life make every day exciting and memorable. I'm grateful to be a part of this community!

My accommodation had a leak in it from the very beginning and the experience has aspects my University life so far.
the wifi needs to be a bit faster and more accessible!!
