The annual Whatuni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs) highlight the incredible work carried out by institutions for their students. Due to Covid restrictions, this year’s awards were not collected on uni campuses as usual, but instead based on submissions from institutions, which were then judged by our special student panel.

I wouldn’t probably choose this university again. The main cons are location in Birmingham, which is not my favorite city at all, no industrial speakers or trips, boring lectures sometimes and no possibility to learn foreign language
I think it very depends on course choice. The advantage belongs to those who have compulsory placements. Hovewer, employability departments called Hired should be more proactive in terms of controlling those organizations which hire students to work for them
Most - compulsory placements, practical modules such as organizing our own evening dinner and overall help and support with dissertation. Least - most of the modules are made for more than one student course, which decreases the overall experience. Sometimes too boring and descriptive. Having guests speaker might help. Also, I am very disappointed that my course (HEVM) does not have any industrial trip such other courses have.
I think that our Guild of students could be more proactive in terms of cooperating with individual courses and lectures to for example organise some trip - local and to abroad, as well
I am not happy with our catering facilities, especially in MH campus. I appreciate new development projects such as new campus that is going to be open soon. I am really disappointed by new temporary library location in Camden House - too small, no quiet zones, cafeteria upstairs etc. hope that new one will be better
I am not very happy about my university location itself. There is only co-op close to one campus, but I would appreciate some local and cheap cafeteria or restaurant closeby as well.
I didn’t try any of them, so my opinion wouldn’t be relevant here. However, the choice seems to be great and everyone can find something. For sports societies, the only bad thing is that they are based quite far away from uni campus.
There is a lot of support in this
Overall I feel my time at university so far has been amazing I’d definitely do it all again ( if it didn’t cost so much ) the staff are supportive and are extremely helpful in anything you’re struggling with I feel that as far as education so far I’ve definitely gotten the most out of this uni course and I feel that anyone who does this course will enjoy it as much as I am
Our university has a hired department that has employability mentors cv mentors and work place mentors that help you in any way they can helping to find placements in your chosen area of profession.
I like the independence we have to do our practical assignments I like the way the modules are presented and the time given for the assignment hand in I dislike the inability to perform as part of a chosen group in semester two as I feel my grade if put with certain individuals could be affected.
I don’t really know what they are or who they are but the university is represented really well with lecturing staff and student ambassadors also the facilities we have we are blessed to have them
The facilities are impeccable we have multiple fully fitted industry style kitchens bakery rooms and state of the ark health hub in our other building
The university is in a prime location it’s in the city center so I can access all the shopping centre also it’s close to bus stops and train stations so it’s easy to get to university
Personally I don’t use them or know much about them but there are a vast range of societies and sports available if we wish to be a part of them
We have two councillors in the uni also all lecturers are supportive and try to help and cater toward your needs all the time
I love the food, the atmosphere and the course. Everyone is very friendly and the staff want students to succeed which is evident with the support and guidance they give.
Yes, there is department dedicated to employability who help students find work placements and jobs as well as support students with CV writing and interview preparation.
I like how interactive and engaging the course is and how dedicated staff are. They always provide fast feedback and answer any misconceptions students have. I love going on trips and experiencing learning by doing. I do not like doing presentations in front of others.
There is a democracy when it comes to the students union as there are candidates who put themselves forward and students vote for them. The person who wins the election voices student concerns which are from each course.
The staff are all wonderful and the canteen is great with varied food choices which taste great. There is also starbucks services and breakfast choices. The computer rooms are vast with fast internet service and IT support available during regular university times (9-4).
Yes its in the city centre so its close to lots of shops and only 20 minutes away from me in a car.
Theres lots of different societies and sports clubs as well as a gym and spa which is lovely and good valud for money.
The uni staff give in depth feedback quickly which is very useful. They also give personal support well as I have been given good advice.
My experience has beenhas been very good overall. I recieve enough support and can rely on staff and the facilities. I manage to learn more, understand and enjoy my course.
UCB is very helpful and quite effective at improving and finding employability. There is a department designated to employability, known as Hired. The staff are friend, approachable and have a designated course assigned to them. Each subject employability tutor is aware of local placement and job opportunities.
I like that my course is taught in both theory and practical manners. The theory lectures aren't to long with ensures we stay engaged and learn effectively. The practicals focus on developing our hands on skills and experience.
The Students' Union represents students quite effectively. There is a high interest in student university experience and feedback is gathered regularly to improve the university.
The University's facilities are satisfactory and are improving year by year. Currently my course will be moving over to new facilities that will enhance our learning.
The University is situated in the Birmingham city centre which makes everything easily accessible and quite close.
There is a variety of different societies that are suitable for people with different interests. Societies are based around the different courses that UCB offers and are appropriate for all students.
Tutors are very supportive and provide beneficial feedback that we can use to develop our work. Extra tutorials can be booked with tutors in order to ensure that we are up to date with content and our understanding of lectures. Additional support is also available within the library; work gets reviewed and help is provided to improve and understand academic writing.
Good, excellent facilities and supportive staff, however it would be beneficial to have more space to study. As i found myself studying outside of a classroom the other day as the library was full and the computer rooms.
We get to go on different placements to get out of our comfort zone! We can also go to hired and get help with how to structure a CV, we can also speak to any employability tutor if we have an concerns.
I like how structured the course is however i don't personally think reading off a power point is beneficial. Especially as we pay 9k per year. I definitely think that the lecturers should engage us with group tasks or quizzes to engage our learning as it gets quite competitive reading from a powerpoint especially for those who may have additional Learning difficulties.
Good, could do with more quiet space to sit and study.
Very close to birmingham city centre
There are many different societies , however they should be advertised more!
Fairly good, would prefer more feedback on work, and more time to be able to use academic skills centre
I’ve been there for almost 3 months and I could already say that it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m very satisfied and I hope that there will be more to say in the following months.
There’s is a department called Hired UCB, they help students with creating CV, finding a new connection or even a job. University itself offers some vacancies.
As long as I’m not from UK I can’t complain about the way of teaching here. I was used to different things and I find the way our university uses quite easier. It’s efficient and interesting. They keep you thinking about the aims and help you evaluate your own opinions. I can’t say that there’s something I don’t like or enjoy.
It’s all set. If I would have any kind of problem the university would be a perfect place to solve it.
I was surprised when I found out about all of the facilities. We have a restaurant, cafeterias, cafes, shop, nurse. They’re really prepared for the students.
I would say that the location is perfect. I walk 3 minutes to school as well as to work. And it takes you less than 10 minutes to get into city centre.
University offers various opportunities of societies. From sporting to international ones. Everyone would fit in somewhere.
If you’re in need of any kind of help or tutoring, you can make an appointment with your teachers and solve the problems with them personally.
Amazing and I wouldn't change it for the world and can't wait for the rest of my life at uni and develop through ucb and being able to grow and living in uni accom
Very good and always helping
I love all of it
Very close to everything
The societies is are very good
I like how small and close nit the university is and you make a lot of friends, like the trips we take abroad and some lectures are very interesting. Just sick of having students around that dont want to learn and fill they just let anyone on the course just for extra numbers. Like some facilities
Lecturers do more to help than the HIRED department
Lectures can be interesting and good help with assignments, some lecturers know what they are on about, some dont There are alot of students who just cant be bothered and dont want to be there so will constantly talk throughout lectures, and the teachers will do nothing about it, paying 9k a year, just to hear the same group of boys talking about football
Should give more updates of what they are doing, never really hear from them, and facilities need to be better , hardly any place to study thats not busy
Need more study spaces and computers, need to open the upstairs of SR resource centre which they rarely do.
Very good location right in city centre
Sports and societies can be very unorganised and never hear about them
Good tutorials and there are health and well being facilities
Brilliant So much support and guidance throughout my three years Take advantage of all resources provided for you as its additional and not always neccesary to teh course but brilliant forafter university
Come into our graduate advantage lessons mutiple time to promote there departments and opportunities to improve our different skills brilliant opportunity for placements and it has been amde clear to us that SFS hasnt had many opportunities but their working on improving it
Involve both practical and theory lessons which help different learners achieve their best motivational and well prepared lectures and lecturers cannot fault my lecturers efforts to help the class achive
I have never really used the studnet union and am unclear about what they do
yes 30 minute walk 10 minute walk from town
I know there is alot of societies but its not something im interested in but many of my friends take part
Absololutley brilliant academic support personal support is also very beneficial as i have used the councelling service before
I've really loved it, my first year was hard and I got so much support despite deferring in my second semester. I've started again in September and have a great support network of friends as well as knowing my tutors are on my side. Would definitely recommend this uni to anyone, academic or vocational
HIRED are a great asset to the uni and have helped me and countless other students get jobs very early on in our particular field
I'm grateful that each lessons PowerPoint and input is available online alongside demonstrations from our tutors, a lot of the courses here are vocational and hands on so not everything can be taught through a PowerPoint/lecture
Really well represented, students are very much listened to as hall managers and union reps are always students so they understand everyone's viewpoint
Top quality resources and really good maintenance as well as proper training for students to use all the equipment
Everything you need is no more than a 20 minute walk away, if that! Variety of shops, gyms, restaurants, clubs and right by the canal
Really well varied and there's a society for everyone really! I would love a music/orchestral society but there are no music courses at UCB so it's uncertain if there are many musicians
Tutors, generally speaking, are incredibly supportive of students whether it be their studies or personal matters, you always get an email response and more often than not if you're not great with written communication they are more than happy to phone/arrange a meeting. The pastoral and councilling facilities are immaculate, I couldn't recommend them enough. Quick waiting time, well educated and obviously trained in helping with any situation a student needs
