Forensic Criminology Psychology

The best aspect i find is - You get so much help and support within your modules from the lectures if you ask and if it is needed. After looking at every aspect of my course, onceI found out the course had totally been overhaled and changed into my 2nd year, I am now totally happy with every aspect of my course. The worst two aspects - How much strike action impacts on your grade, the feel of the course and the help you recieve and, it really impacts, your moral in the module negatively, to the point in giving up on the module. Complaints about lectures conduct and baf attitude should be investigated fully, not swept under the carpet. Also if a course is to change to a new course it should be made clear and not in tiny writing when signing up at the very bottom of the page, that the course is a brand new course and certain modules, will now not be represented. We should read very small print, but myself and many other students on my course did not. May i suggest having it in large writing at the top of any agreements and thus making students fully aware on sign up and at every opportunity on open day, i was not made aware nor were my fellow students that the course was going to change, writing it in large print, will make it so much easier for students. Students can travel from Manchester and Birmingham and finding out the course has changed, into the 2nd semester of the 1st year or even the 2nd year can lead to upset and being on a course you do not want to be on and thusv will stop the many complaints about the course further up the line. It is not the way to sell a course and obtain money from the students. I myself missed the small writing, as well as 3/4 of my fellow students did, having students which are not happy on a course and for what ever reason cannot change to another course is not the way forward and not the way to obtain money from students, or the way to sell a course, it will give the university a bad name and is it ethically right? It leads to miss trust towards the University and I now will tell anyone signing up to Staffordshire University, please read the small print.

THIRD YEAR

Nursing Practice (Child) (September Entry Stafford) BSc (Hons)

University rating (3)

The student community isn’t as great as first expected. The only contact we have had is from emails. I would have liked to have had meetings at university where we can share our thoughts and opinions. And if this was available then the opportunity was not made apparent to us. I do enjoy that the campus at Stafford is more private and smaller for a more commune feeling and a feeling like we can be more comfortable in voicing what is needed. However, there was no student life for us. There was not an opportunity for students to meet before hand and become comfortable with each other before starting our course. Which would have been nice as starting the course with was very daunting and at times lonely while waiting for making friends while at university. Student support is good at the university but could be better. Lectures were available most of the time via email. However, they were not always at university and the students were not made aware of when they were on campus which could be hard sometimes if something needed to be talked about in person. The campus itself is very nice and up to date. The extension of the new simulation rooms are amazing and make the simulation process feel more real and less like we are at university.

Fine Art BA (Hons)

University rating (4)

The best aspects of the university are the things to do - there are plenty of themed club nights and a variety of societies that constantly host events, so if you are looking for a good night life and to make lots of friends it is perfect! As a fine art student however we don’t often received much support for our materials, learning resources or simply support from our lecturers. We haven’t had a trip this year at all even though it is required for us to visit places to complete this years essays. This is incredibly frustrating. Strikes have also been a constant problem, wether it be lecturers striking or strikes that prevent lecturers from travelling in.

The people and course are very good, but other aspects to do with location and housing that aren't directly influenced by the university are not so great.

Computer Science MSc

University rating (4)

Well to be frank, I study a distance learn module. As a student enrolled on the MSc Computer Science degree. I do like Staffordshire University as a whole. However, this year I would say the above metrics as services as reactive, rather than proactive, in order to feel the quality or presence of any of the above services the student must take a proactive approach or potentially, they will get little engagement. I was able to recognise the student support is good but only after reaching out, the same can be said for all the services. They would be better if they were more proactive in their respective roles. Making an effort to induct, and connect with students at the point of enrolled. For me, this would mean webinars, meetings face-to-face. As a dyslexic student, reading and written channels carry less weight than face-to-face engagement. I can remember things that are said and done peer-to-peer, but the written word goes in one ear and out the other (at times).

Nursing Practice (Adult) - Stafford Campus BSc (Hons)

University rating (5)

Staff always respond to emails quickly and are always willing to provide support. They signpost you to teams that can provide the best advice. In the past, students found travelling to Stafford campus difficult but there have been some helpful changes. There are two shuttle buses (one from Stoke and one from the train station) that take you directly to campus. Student Union has a range of items that students may need, but I think students should be made aware of everything that is available more often. Two campuses that I have been to have great facilities and spaces. Plenty of library resources, great computer areas, social spaces, simulation labs and simulation equipment, and even stress relieving activities such as jigsaw puzzles. There are regular lectures explaining the library services clearly which is excellent.
