Sort:Latest reviewsI've been here 2 years, foundation and first year, and I feel terrible being at this school. The Physics department is horrible, they aren't really focused on being good teachers or the students. They don't listen to what students say unless it's positive and they will lie straight to your face. The school supposedly prides itself on student well-being but that is far from the truth. They've shown no care about any struggle I've been dealing with since the beginning. At this point I don't even feel like I can trust the staff at all. The area is remote and very few large attractions, which I'm ok with. I like quite and if I want I can always visit somewhere. They don't really give a good school/life balance. They say go join a society and have fun, but when? The class schedules are terrible, classes everyday but never bunched together. You basically have to stay on campus or just miss class because they're spread 1-3 hours apart for 1 hour long classes.
I genuinely regret choosing Aberystwyth University, and it has been one of the worst decisions of my life. The environment feels incredibly monotonous and isolating. The steep hill separating the university campus from the town creates a real physical and social divide — most students only cross it when they absolutely have to. As a result, campus life feels disconnected from the town, and the overall atmosphere is dull and unwelcoming. Mental health struggles are a serious issue here. A few years ago, a Computer Science student named Charlie tragically took his own life, an event that highlighted deep problems with student wellbeing and support at the university. I strongly encourage anyone considering Aberystwyth to research this incident and the surrounding concerns. Another thing I wish I had known beforehand is how heavily politicised the university and town are. There is constant and very prominent exposure to LGBT+ flags, clubs, events, and activism — far more than I expected or was comfortable with. It dominates the social and visual environment in a way that wasn’t clear from the marketing or open days. On top of everything, the value for money is poor. Tuition fees have increased every single year I’ve been here, with students essentially forced to pay more or drop out. For what you get — both academically and in terms of student experience — it simply isn’t worth the cost. There are far better universities in the UK that offer a more vibrant, balanced, and supportive environment. Think very carefully before choosing Aberystwyth.
I'm an international student from FRance and I really like Aberystwyth, it's a small town near the sea, we can hike and enjoy the landscapes, the student support is really important here and this is very cool

Everything is accessible; however, there are not many places to eat and drink on campus.
The best parts is the location, the ability to walk wherever and find a pretty view, the worst part is probably all the hills (reasonably)

The worst aspect of the university is the location being on top of an annoying hill, whereas there are many positives, especially the module options for my course.

Aberystwyth is a great University for Computer Science. I was a career changer with no experience coding before coming here and the course taught me everything I needed to gain a placement with a AAA game studio. I wanted to write this review because I remember looking for Universitys when applying and wondering if Aber is good. I saw a review saying that the course didn't prepare them for the Industry at all. I strongly disagree. As someone who didn't come from an ICT background and didn't code at all before, I can tell you you will learn everything you need. Just go to your practicles! Truth is because it's Computer Science attendence is low, and students who don't do the un-assesed practices and coursework will have a hard time. If you want to go to a Uni though where lecturers care about you, take the time to talk to you and are invested in your success it's a great choice. Aberystwyth also has good ties to the industry and goes out of its' way to get students career ready. If you want to know where students end up just look up the Uni on linkedIn. Aberystwyth has gotten rewards for its' teaching repeatedly, and rightfully so. Yes, it's not a Russel Group University and prestige is not on the same level, but if you're engaged and want to learn the skills and have great lecturers and an active student life (because there is really nothing else to distract you from your studies in Aberystwyth) it's a great choice.
The practicles make the course great! The lecturers care and there's an active Computer Science student club.
Ok. First years can happily stay in accommodation, but if you're older than 22 chances are you'll want to rent privately in town. Students are not grouped by interests, age or other criteria in housing. Rent is just as much as privately renting for far worse conditions. If you value your sleep, rent privately. If you're young and want to party, halls are great.
