The annual Whatuni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs) highlight the incredible work carried out by institutions for their students. Due to Covid restrictions, this year’s awards were not collected on uni campuses as usual, but instead based on submissions from institutions, which were then judged by our special student panel.

It has been really good with lots of support from the people I have met here and the university. My actual course has been really interesting although there isn’t too much sports content. The facilities provided are excellent.
The uni have specialised departments that aim to help students with finding jobs or placements. I haven’t utilised these yet but other people I know have and they highly recommend I do go to them for assistance.
I like how lectures can be student led but I feel like most lectures are just us getting given slideshows with some explanation as to the content in these slides.
The student union is really well organised. The freshers week they put on for us freshers was really good and shone a good light on the uni. The facilities are really good and they keep these up to date
The location is ideal as my accommodation is on campus. The safety is very good in terms of fire alarms and windows safety, although the fire alarms are very sensitive. The cost is reasonable as it includes £30 a week at the uni canteen although my accommodation seems dated compared to other accommodations on campus with a more expensive price.
My university’s facilities are very good and up to date. They are modern and well kept
My accommodation is actually on campus so it is ideal for turning up to my lectures. The distance is about a 2 minute walk from my accommodation to the main auditorium which is very good. There is 1 local supermarket and a small tesco within a 5 minute drive of the university with a local village close by providing essentials. It is roughly a 20-30 minute drive away from the centre though which isn’t ideal for nights out.
There are a wide variety of societies or sports to choose from. The university also allows proposals for new societies or clubs which I think is a really good idea.
Personal support is outstanding speaking from direct interaction with these departments. They provide loads of support. Academic support is really good as well. Tutors and lecturers can provide support through emailing them or they will find time to meet up for a one on one if necessary.
I have only just started, around 5 weeks ago. I am loving every second and cant wait to continue. I believe thoroughly that i will achieve great things here and will go on to be succesful
They create great opportunites for all the students
The tutors are easy to get along with, free going and always urge me to do my best. Some workshops feel like lectures
It is thriving in and around Uni
the variety is excellent
It is excellent, they offer us so much
Not great but i have had a few tutors that stand out as amazing ...with everyone they are top class tutors . I'd say some of the staff are amazing ..even in admin and Assessments team just really makes the journey through your degree easier. It is what you make it and my time at uni hasn't been the best but others have loved it here.
We have a graduate section , sef employment department , grant scheme ect. Careers department , small business set up scheme .
End of module feedback forms are online and anonymous . Lecture content is uploaded quickly , I don't like that we are forced to do placement in both first and second years its always difficult focusing on academic assignments and work placements . Contact hours per week are currently 4 in level 6 first semester . Will be about 19 in second semester
Good . I have seen massive progression of the student union since beginning my degree . I think they are passionate , professional and make progress . The university is a better place due to the changes they have pushed for
Good . Could be better but good newly improved gym, sports centre , good library , nice food diner, STU run bar, car parking isnt amazing but its improving
Limited but ok.
Ok. Student union , pastoral team from the chaplaincy are good. It is improving ...only just got a mental health department to support students
I really enjoy university, and everything about it, I would tell people who want to go to uni, that to just go to uni confident as everyone is in the same boat as you.
Very helpful, with sessions available
I love the practical element, I least enjoy the theoretical part
Yes it is
It is very thorough
Not what I thought, pretty quiet and little to do as I’m on a foundation year. But I think it’s about what sort off halls your in. I’m in a cheaper one and there are zero places here to hang out other than another students room. We refer to our halls as “Dead”
Non existent from my experience at the uni
Freedom to learn myself however my tutor barely talks
Don’t see many off them or know any off them
Good price, good location with great security.
Very good there is a lot of choice
Couldn’t say as I’ve never used them or know how to use them
Its been good, worth coming to. Im enjoying the course so far as sports journalism is am enjoyable course. Ive signed up for football but the manager refusues to pick me for training #AtheyOut
Very very well. Big focus
Its fun but shorthand lectures are very crammed together
Decent, its alright
Everything really good tbf
Modern, well good
Yes, bit far out from town like
overall, it has been a brilliant experience learning new things about film and meeting new people. Now that I'm in my second year it has become so much easier settling into university due to knowing everyone and where everything is.
There's a team dedicated to helping all students improve anything they need assistance with, whether it be uni work or developing your CV
What I like most about my course is the variety of subject matters I never really delved into prior to uni. What I don't like about it is the lack of practicality of film-making so far
Not much knowledge in this particular area.
The overall living conditions are highly adequate. The only personal issues I have are that the shower tends to alternate between hot and cold whilst I'm using it and due to the light switch in the kitchen being a sensor rather than A normal switch, it'll automatically turn off every short period of time while I'm in the kitchen doing whatever it is I am doing in there, which tends to get rather irritating after a while.
Extremely good, could do with small improvements here and there but definitely up to standards
Yes, due to being on-campus and there being stores within walking distance to get all my supplies
I don't have much knowledge on the matter, but there seems to be a wide variety of societies and sports that I'll have to check out.
It is all brilliant, I can, with ease, contact whoever I need to contact about anything with just a few clicks.
Love the university and the little community that it is in! Everything is convenient and library is very good. Staff are very nice and helpful and the food in the cafe is good! Generally good offering of societies / sports and activities in the SU... just need to find a better system for washing!!!!
They are very good and attentive with helping you in all of these aspects. Met many staff who deal with all of the topics even in my lecturers, around student services and advertised in uni or on Instagram. Very helpful and approachable
I love the course, love the lecturers and how they recommend reading resources for most lectures BUT reading of a PowerPoint is tedious and not a way many learn! Especially like myself, More interactive things! Especially in the morning to wake people up!
Good union, a little smaller than expected. Again, a voting option of events to hold in the union would be great and get people together. Nice atmosphere though and I know there is weekly events that run which is good. Also very affordable !
Location is brilliant. Perfect distance from university and train station. Very safe with the new gates! I do think it’s a little pricey and £100-£110 is more than enough for what you get.
Good, gym would be a lot better and bigger with more equipment. Changing rooms are ok
Yes, short walk from Tesco and 10/15 to Morrison’s! Nice cafes down the road and a little pub which also does food! Little town has everything you need and if not the train is very quick and affordable to Leeds!
I like the variety, I play boxing myself which I’m loving. Would be nice if there was an option for students to potentially come up with an idea and if they can get a certain number together then to try and carry it out, just for those who don’t like any of the societies / sports on offer.
The academic support is good, they actually care and are patient with helping you. Many resources and staff to help. Biggest downfall is the mental health aspect. No one on duty after hours and counselling is not the solution for everyone. Get students who are in the same boat together so they can talk to each other when staff are not available!!
I've enjoyed my modules and my lectures/workshops and have met some great people but I find it tiring to travel there and back especially on days where I have work immediately after or when I only have an hours session.
there is an entire module dedicated to employment, transferable skills and modelling our cvs. we are shown what to look for and what to expect in the work place. we are provided with 2 opportunities to go on placements in our chosen sector. we have a my future team that is always readily available to help with applying for jobs, placements and cvs
I like the workshops most as they include a lot of self lead tasks and group tasks. I don't enjoy the lectures as much as it is usually just reading from the powerpoint instead of adding anything new
I haven't had much interaction with the student union since induction week.
so far so good
the university is an hours commute by train from my accommodation but is only a 15 minute walk from its local train station and has a shuttle to take you into town very quickly to the local shops and cafes
I haven't heard of many societies and the ones I have heard of don't seem very active yet.
my personal tutor has been amazing. she has helped me to reach out to the counselling facilities and the my future team to discuss my options moving forward. she helped me to plan out my placement and make adjustments where necessary and is always available to listen
Very good. Would recommend to other people. Parking facilities could be better. Staff could be more professional. Accommodation could also be more modern and supported better.
Have a My future team who support you 3 years after graduating which is very good.
Taught in classrooms rather than lecture theatres. Lack of communication between staff, one member tells us one thing, discuss the same thing but are told 2 very different things.
Good representation. Shop is good, prices are a bit steep. Working for them is also good.
Electricity cuts off. Shoddy build work that was not paid for. Location is good and cost is good.
Toilets in different locations, good eating facilities, variety of stalls good bar too.
Near the centre of a town, lots of transport links, and plenty of shops.
Good variety of standard sports, not really different sports.
Tutors are both supportive and motivational. If you need anything they are always available. Mental health support is absolutely horrific. One person went to see them as the mental health officer told her to "Stop Crying" and that she was fine and was being stupid.
