Mathematics BSc (Hons)

University rating (4)

I am currently on my second year studying at Heriot-Watt University but decided after first year that I wanted to change my course as it did not feel like it was the right thing for me. The departments in both my old course and the mathematics department, of which I am now a part of, couldn't have been more helpful and put myself at ease during a rather difficult decision and transition. With the maths department there is so much support with both lecturers and the others that take the course too and are never left feeling like you are alone. There are multitudes of study spaces so no matter what kind of space you are looking for, a quiet room, group study space, somewhere with an atmosphere around it, there is always something for you to find. The student facilities are great as well and extremely welcoming. The student shop is open until 10pm everyday so you're not without some necessities for long if you are either living on campus or are having a long day of studying there, an the student union which has a cafe and a bar with kitchen is always a great place to be able to relax for a little while or have a bit of time out with some friends. This is open from 9am till late every day. So, there is always something to do, this is especially useful as one downside to Heriot-Watt is the location. Don't get me wrong it is a beautiful sight and I love the quietness of it as that is more of what I am used to over the big city life, however, the university is just that little bit out of the way and makes it slightly more awkward for getting in and out of central. The buses are great, but regardless of how well the buses may be it can still take up to an hour to get in to the city centre depending the time of day and the traffic. But like it said, that is only one downfall in oppose to the many, many positives of which there are at Heriot-Watt University.

The campus itself is well equipped and a particularly nice place to be owing to the fact is is very green (lots of woodland!) however the campus is located on the very edge of the city of Edinburgh. This can make it difficult to access and therefore I would argue this impacts student life and the student union as most students, not living on campus, find little reason to spend a substantial amount of time to travel to the campus for solely visiting the union.

The majority of the facilities are old and the main buildings are from the 60's and 70's - retrofitting can only do so much. Unless you are in the GRID or Library which are always so busy, all the other computers are slow. The location is excellent. I love how it is not in the middle of a city but still good transport links to campus. The campus itself is beautiful with all the trails and the trees. I enjoy going walks on lunchtime and being able to breathe fresh air. I've found student support to be one of the Uni's greatest assets. They have a dedicated team that are ready to help in any situation. I myself used student support at the end of Year 2 and am really appreciative of the work they do. Student life and student union are things that I am unsure about due to my inexperience of them. It appears there is a union for a lot of activities such as languages, football or hiking and there are religious groups too. All hobbies and beliefs seem catered for. I know the union building to be poor in comparison to other Uni's unions.

Dubai Campus, just to be clear. Pros: The campus is compact, so there are no long walks required to go to classes. Facilities are always kept clean. Plenty of study spaces inside the building. Ease of access is a huge part of why this campus is good. The lecturers and staff are welcoming and helpful. Equipment was carefully chosen to help students study, with state-of-the-art equipment in the labs, and an ambiance built for studying even in the cafe. Cons: Parking can be pricey, but alternatives with a short walk are available. The campus is compact, so it might not cater to students who would prefer a more vibrant student life with outdoor activities and the like. The food choices can be improved.

Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons)

Heriot-watt is situated next to a beautiful lake making the university feel open and welcoming. Unfortunately, due to its small campus, the facilities are limited. Not much sports facilities are available but a lot of student activities take place on a weekly basis. There is always something exciting going on at The Plaza for students to bond.

Best aspects - Campus is very green and aesthetically pleasing. Lecturers care about what you do and are very accommodating to help you to success. Sports at the uni are second to none. Worst aspects - The bus journey can take 45 minutes which adds up if you go to uni every day.

I think Heriot-Watt University is unique because of its strong industry ties, global perspective, and academic excellence. The university offers cutting-edge facilities and research opportunities with a focus on science and engineering. Excellent support services are provided, fostering a productive learning environment. However, there is still space for improvement when it comes to fostering community involvement, increasing diversity and inclusion, and funding additional infrastructure development. I believe that Heriot-Watt offers a well-rounded education overall, but it would be beneficial to keep working to improve these areas in order to give students an even better educational experience.

Best part of the university is that the lecturers are mostly friendly. The worst part of the university is that you don’t know how to cope with the learning system.
