Game Art - BA (Hons)

University rating (4)

The main building itself is quite a small, quaint campus - it is quite easy to bump into people and get to know others who aren't on your course. The location is extremely convenient, you are a 10-20 minute walk from most places in the city centre, and although there is no specific Futureworks student accommodation, there are plenty of student accommodation facilities in close proximity to the university, many of my friends stayed at places such as Riverside, X1 Lettings and iQ. Public transport in the city is very convenient, there are free buses that take you around the city centre and you are close to both Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria train stations. The metrolink service is also very convenient. The uni hosts a few events, such as Life Drawing classes and talks from game companies/industry professionals, but it would be nice if these were more frequent. As it is only a small uni, there is no students' union per se, but social and live music events are hosted during the semester and during reading weeks which are a good opportunity to meet other people at the uni who are not necessarily on your course. The facilities are quite good for a small uni, for the art students we can book out Wacom Cintiqs and other smaller tablets to use within the building for our work, and there is a drop-in area where you can work on computers outside of lecture time. Double-monitor setups are used in all of the Art & Design classrooms, which is extremely beneficial when you are using the specialist software, however it would be nice if this was also the case in the drop-in area where PCs currently only have one monitor. There is quite a small library in the building, but we also have access to UClan's online library. I've personally never used either of these myself, but I have friends who frequently use the library to borrow out books. I have not had much interaction with student services and support, but I am aware there are free counselling sessions, financial support and bursaries available. On a day to day basis, the tutors are very supportive and understanding, it is easy to reach out to them if you have any concerns.

Music Production - BA (Hons)

University rating (5)

Futureworks have some great facilities and equipment to use to help with assignments or even just for personal use. The tutors are friendly and always willing to help and even just have a good chat with. The university offers games nights and many other events which are run by our student council who always get stuff done and made sure we are heard. I think the only thing I’d have to say to improve is just accessibility to the studios especially on weekends which the time slots being a lot shorted than weekdays but other than that Futureworks was a great choice for what I wanted to do and they’ve supported me with a lot.

Film and TV Production

University rating (4)

Fantastic facilities and equipment with a real focus on practical filmmaking. The tutors work within the industry and therefore have great knowledge and insight. I really enjoyed my course and have met fellow creative students who I will keep in contact with and work on future projects with.

Audio Engineering and Production

University rating (4)

Futureworks is a great choice for those interested in audio engineering, films and game design. The university has some very nice high quality facilities, some very experienced faculty and an industry focused curriculum that provides valuable skills and knowledge. It's worth noting that the course does heavily rely on Pro Tools as its primary DAW. But overall it’s a great university. I would highly recommend it.

Post Production for Film and TV - BA (Hons)

University rating (1)

Absolutely terrible student support. If you have Autism, or mental health issues, do not go to Futureworks. The facilities for the post production course have been dreadful and that course feels like it has been abandoned. Everyone in my class has had issues with the course and many of them feel like they were mis-sold the course. But again, the student support is SO bad. They don't care about the students and are not bothered if you are struggling. I had to leave due to the insane ignorance of student support and i have left with emotional trauma and more health issues.

Games Design - BA (Hons)

University rating (3)

The small class sizes are great for one on one support and teaching, although teacher quality can vary greatly. Some more care could be taken when hiring new staff. Student services is shockingly bad and woefully unsuitable for providing students with support.
