Perfect for students who want the university experience with the drama school course content. All lecturers are very involved with the industry and are either currently working in it, have worked previously, or have taught in the drama schools so students here get the most up to date knowledge on what the industry wants and that is implemented into our training. We our spoilt for space in the AMATA building with space to book out and equipment, the only thing I would say is that it can get competitive especially near assessment time where booking space is harder. Campus is beautiful, especially when it's sunny, a lot of beautiful gardens, flowers and trees. It's nice to walk through campus and see all the dog walkers. Also the AMATA department is also on the same campus as the photography, fashion, game and film departments so there are plenty of opportunities for acting students to collaborate with other students on projects, I personally have worked with film and fashion photography students meaning I got experience with modelling and acting for camera in addition to the course content. Really good support for students in terms of mental health and academic support, there are support systems that are made clear all over campus on posters as well as newsletters which say where students can get help. The library has great resources like DVDs, CDs, VHS, cassette tapes etc.
In person. Good balance of contact time for practical work as well as time for independent study, and great lecturers, what I will say is that sometimes modules are taught by more than 1 lecturers and sometimes that means that there is slight inconsistencies during the transitions
Great being right on campus, especially for first year, a lot of desk and storage space, nice size rooms. My only issue was that because of the laundry situation, circuit laundry, I couldn't afford to use it since it cost a lot and wouldn't fit in my budget so I had to hand wash my clothes. Also I heard from others that the laundry was a nightmare. With the Glasney Lodge with security I always felt safe walking around the accommodation at night. They were also really useful when our microwave broke to get us a new one straight away.
The university is located in Cornwall, far from a lot with only certain amenities available here. The facilities are alright, nothing really special available I don't think, although I don't have a lot of experience to compare. There has been a lot of support available to me especially since English is not my first language
The course has been changed a lot for my year specifically, when I was applying I was informed about different modules and what not but was informed that all is subject to change. For the changes some where really good and pleasant whilst some made me feel like programming part of the course was just an afterthought. It is easy to contact and get in reach with most of the teaching team. And since the games academy is the biggest department the facilities are great.
I have stayed at glasney view which is part of glasney village, a part of campus in penryn. Whilst living on campus is great for coming to uni, however, since the campus is on top of a hill, walking anywhere included hills or stairs. There is a bus stop on campus that a lot of bus lines stop at, making it a bit of a hub for busses, there is a train station nearby but that involves walking up a hill since the Falmouth penryn area is nothing but hills. Furthermore, apart from ASDA which is nearby there is nothing around. You'll need to travel to Falmouth or other towns to get anything. Whilst I had the cheapest accommodation available it was still quite pricey and I have had a lot of issues with room and getting help resolving them
Falmouth is a lovely university in a great location. Both campuses are less than 20 min from the ocean and the penryn campus in particular is full of green spaces to hang out in the summer time. The town itself is super cozy and pretty too with a good consistent bus route all around Cornwall a good variety of places to eat and a good handful of bars for nights out. I’d say it’s generally the perfect location for someone who appreciates both the quiet aspects and loud crazy aspects of life haha I can vouch for the university’s general student support outside of lessons too , each course has representatives that give feedback to the course leads regularly so they are constantly improving the course, and there are plenty of aid options for students with learning or mental health difficulties. Though I haven’t experienced this personally I feel it necessary to critique its physical disability accessibility however as I have seen classmates with mobility issues and aids struggle.
I study animation on the penryn campus a love it, the course is very industry focused so I feel confident that the skills they have taught will transfer smoothly into the industry when I graduate. First year was focused on learning the fundamentals of both animation and design. Second year is where you begin to learn the industry pipeline by making your own student films in teams, in this year you can also chose to study abroad ( I am doing so currently) , the university has connections to some other amazing universities in interesting locations however it’s a very self lead and difficult path to chose. From what I’ve gathered third year is focused on building up portfolio work and connections in the industry ready for when you leave at the end of that year. The course has industry standard tools like - tv paint, toom boom harmony, adobe suit, maya and z brush and the teachers and technicians teach them very well. All of the teachers are super friendly and helpful with industry backgrounds, you really couldn’t ask for better
I lived in a standard studio in packsaddle and loved it. It was right next to the uni campus so it took less than 10 min to walk to my lessons and there’s a bus stop outside leading straight to town centre quite regularly.
Falmouth uni is the best place in the whole of the Uk to study photography because the facilities and knowledge/skill of the lecturers. The location is amazing because it’s near beaches and Falmouth town is very safe and really nice. Worst aspects, would just be transport links back to the rest of the UK because we’re so deep in cornwall and there aren’t any good trains till about Plymouth/exeter
It’s an absolutely amazing course that I love and I’m having a great time because my course is very specific to exactly what I want to do. And the lecturers and facilities are so great that it makes lessons really good. A down side, would be time with lecturers, because sometimes they can be very very busy but then again their teaching 3 years of students and you can always book a 1 to 1
It’s an absolutely amazing new build that’s really really nice and about 15min walk to the uni My only complaint, is that there is a massive really steep set of stairs which is the only way to the uni and it can be very annoying having to do those stairs every day
The best part of Falmouth University is the community of artistic individuals that can easily lend everyone strong connections for current or future work. However, due to its limited access to activities or events for young people that don't center around drinking or alcohol it can become quite desolate and lonely. The University does actively tackle this though with providing various societies that enable all students to find a place to feel fulfilled outside of studies if they wish to access it. This is great especially since the lack of town provided entertainment is in fact not there responsibility so to compensate for the lack of it in order to maintain student's well being .
Film and television provides a great deal of insight into the I dustry with background knowledge and practical skills, however it's failure to sufficiently provide a realistic outlook of the career opportunities for different areas of the course in the first year leads to many students feeling unsure of their decisions for the future and some may even be mislead by a false hope or expectation.
The kitchens are very low quality and almost encourage a lack of cleanliness since they are designed for up to 8 or 9 students to share. In comparison to other options that the university does provide it's level of cost is arguably too high. My stay was only for a week at glasney before returning to my private accommodation based in Falmouth.
First year on the animation course was amazing, yes the workload was way more intense than I anticipated, but some of the modules were really fun and I enjoyed participating in group projects. The student life outside of uni was great, lots of fun things to try out and places to try and explore. However, as a disabled student who has progressed into being a wheelchair user whilst being here, the uni is not the most accessible place. This is partially due to how steep parts of the uni is, I can't get around by myself. Sometimes the lifts aren't available, which means big detours just to get to my place. It's difficult trying to get the teachers to understand that the studios aren't accessible to me and the uni has been stubborn to make changes for me to participate. I can't personally promote attending here if you're a wheelchair user, due to the extremely difficult terrain of Falmouth. Even being a crutch user when I first joined here was difficult to get around. Additionally, the Uni has made some surprising decisions in response to being told of teachers behaviour, which to me has been discouraging and made it difficult to attend my lessons. The experience has definitely been eye opening, but it's difficult to hype up a place that's been so draining.
A good mixture of lesson types. First year was intense, a lot of 9-6 days, if not later. A lot of being in studios "after hours" to keep up with the workload. A fun mixture of drawing workshops, life drawing, mixture of 2D/3D and stopmotion available during first year before specialising. The hours are very long, and could be more accommodating considering how much was put on our shoulders. Availability to meet with tutors and course leaders has been more accessible and most teachers have been open for meeting up outside of lessons for 1:1s.
Glasney was great for first year!! I'm so glad I was allocated a room there, being close to studios made going to work SO much easier. Meeting friends afterwards was also so much easier because we were all so close together! I find myself missing it, even if flatmates didn't wash their dishes and left piles of mouldy kitchenware on the sides. I think this might have been one of the best parts about first year, and I wish that I had reapplied to stay there for my 2nd year too. Although it might seem pricey first going in, you're not going to find private housing for much cheaper :)
Its a great place to study as it is a great location, with high level teaching, with multiple teachers with PHDs and some of the best and biggest studios
All teachers are lovely and very supportive and are ready to do what they can to make your dream come true
Large double room with ensuite, some of the best uni accomodation out there
Best would definitely be the amazing facilities available and the fantastic technician staff. They are the ones who make everything happen, in terms of art. Being within a 5min walk of a fab beach helps a lot too. Downside is maybe the actual content I have learnt. In our final year we have definitely been left to our own devices, which I can understand with how much time artwork can take however the time we do have scheduled lectures, teach me, I am desperate to learn more about art, art history, not just from my teacher's experiences.
Most of my learning has been done in person which is great. I feel like I am earning my bang for my bucks. I can have access to as much contact time with my selected lecturers and technicians as I choose. Course hours, as an artist, are what you make of it, its up to you how many hours you put in.
Any issues brought up before have been fixed
Everyone at my university i feel i can speak openly to about anything and I always have access to equipment.
The facilities at Penryn Campus are incredible, with multiple rooms filled with high powered and modern computers, Green screen rooms, multi camera studios and more. The campus is very large and stunning, great for walks! The location is amazing next to 2 stunning beaches and falmouth town with many shops and places to eat. However trains around the surrounding area can be very slow and those travelling into falmouth uni can expect long journeys.
Overall for my specific study interest in audio my lecturer is great and offers many different sessions teaching me what I need to know, making sure everyone understands the course content. 99% of the course is taught in person and therefore is much easier to understand and easier to ask for help whenever I may need it.
The uni halls on Penryn campus are fine for what they are. The double rooms offer just enough space to be comfortable. However the beds are usually uncomfortable and become damaged easily, there are often problems with heating and water in flats that need to be fixed. Overall the worst part of my uni experience so far has been because of uni halls, mainly due to their very expensive cost. The prices for halls at falmouth are very high and the rooms do not represent this at all.

I hope the university may give more support to Chinese students and the model of the course should be changed for spring semester
