Student reviews also form the basis of our annual Whatuni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs), which highlight great work carried out by institutions for their students.
The facilities in my institution are up to date, all support needed as a student is given from the first day you got admitted. The library is functional 24/7 with a goo library assistance app. Programs tailored to students and career growth are frequently organized to position students for the task ahead. The staffs and lecturers are welcoming , always there to offer support anytime. Students are encouraged to take up their own initiatives as the institution is their to guide you on every step, just bring up your ideas and see how it grows. I could not have gotten it more better except in BCU. I am happy to be here. BCU is a great place to study and a citadel of learning. I AM BCU always. Long Live BCU
We have career facilities and career fairs are been organized frequently. You can also book an appointment to see a career instructor. The lecturers are of high quality and high quality course contents are been taught. The course contents taught reflects the dynamic industrial and commercial needs of the present society . Our labs are properly equipped and all facilities are in full functions. Regular maintenance are being carried out always to ensure that all facilities are functioning well. Means of tutor contact are very easy. No better place to be than BCU.
Affordable places are around the center, and living costs are ok. Safety is ok, public buses are available to an excellent number of routes and ply 24/7 most of them. I am yet to graduate, so I cannot tell you the opportunity for graduate employment but most organizations are not fair in their recruitment process based on the on ones I have applied to so far
The rose experience is that the uni cares more about the attendance than actual teaching.
The teaching could be better
Very modern, welcoming campus. A lot of facilities and resources that are easily accessible to students. A vast amount of creative spaces to utilise. Parkside is surrounded by green spaces and plenty of social areas. Curzon Library has a large collection of academic resources and very good student support services. Would ideally love if there were more cheap food and drink places closer to campus. Also if some of the facilities like printing (e.g laser/high quality printing) were cheaper or even somewhat free for design students.
Lecturers are very supportive and helpful. They keep online resources up to date and keep in frequent contact. I like the schedule of my course and being able to use a blend of the online resources provided as well as information given in teaching sessions is very helpful. I have no improvements to suggest.
I’m a part-time masters student, which means I travel in from quite a distance. However, the uni has been very accommodating of this. The uni facilities are good but some of the classrooms have a poor design with columns which block the lecturer at times. The teaching has been good. The workshop facilities are excellent and I wish I had more time to use them. I’m impressed by the food discount that has been applied recently to assist with the cost of living crisis. This is hugely appreciated! There could be more places to sit and eat lunch.
The course is 100% in person which is a bit challenging when I travel in from far away. However, it’s always ok if I miss a session as I can catch up separately with the tutor. I’d like to see tutors have a better grip on Moodle/Teams as it’s been a bit chaotic at times. The part time course is well considered and planned so I can work my job alongside it. The conversion year was very challenging and very content heavy and I struggled to cope at times. But I do now feel well set up to complete the masters.
I love university; I like the people, the lecturers, the big library and the good location. I study at Curzon Campus which is n the city centre, so everything is near. I would only say that some lecturers could do a better job of supporting students and connecting with them. Some lecturers just read from the PowerPoint which many students can do themselves. Overall, i believe the teaching is very good, but some things could be changed.
The teaching is okay, but could be better, as in, more interaction and more active learning rather than listening passively. Some lecturers read from the PowerPoint. I like the course content. Although I often meet with my tutor, some of my friends have never even seen their tutor, which I don't think is right.
The best aspects are the friendly, helpful atmosphere created by the staff throughout the university. The worst aspects are the intimidating and confusing entrance area and signage for navigating the building in Curzon building
The supportive, inclusive and friendly tutors are the best bits. The worst bits are the toilets in the Schoold of art, which are cramped and feel too publicly exposed
The learning spaces are really convenient and useful to work in.
I think a lot of students would benefit from more access to online learning options.
The friendliness of everyone i have come into contact with has really helped my studies along with the facilities put in place to better a students experience. One thing I would say needs improving from personal experience is fire safety. There has been a major fire at a major building in each year of my studies so far and this has been cause for concern and prevented me from attending seminars.
The content learnt is something that I find very enjoyable and it makes me glad to have picked this course to study. I feel as though the tutor time isn't very frequent and sometimes engagement seems to be an issue in the seminars I attend. The class feels disbanded and I myself feel like an outcast from time to time. This however stems from me not being able to afford to go out and participate in activities with my course mates due to the cost of living as a student.
I had the perfect living experience last year in halls. The maintenance and tight security can be a pain at times as they have access to your flat at all times which can feel like an invasion of privacy. However, I understand this maintains a good standard of safety as I never felt unsafe in the building thanks to it. The location couldn't be more perfect and the cost of living there is more than reasonable. From the mailing to the waste services, everything was smooth and easy for me. The common rooms were bonus entertainment and a good way to make friends. The weekly fire alarm wasn't the best but I understand that it was for a good reason which once again ensures safety for the residents of the building.
The university has great facilities for every faculty and everything is really new and well kept. The staff are really wonderful and approachable and will help you with every situation. I’ve had an incredibly positive experience as a second-year student at Birmingham City University. The university offers a fantastic balance between academic rigor and real-world application, which has helped me develop both personally and professionally. One of the standout aspects of BCU is the quality of its teaching staff. Lecturers are not only experts in their fields but also genuinely committed to helping students succeed. They go above and beyond to ensure concepts are thoroughly understood, and they are always approachable, whether it’s for extra support or advice on assignments and career guidance. The practical focus of the courses is another huge advantage. As a computing student, I’ve worked on projects that directly relate to industry needs, using tools and technologies like Python, Java, and Linux. These hands-on experiences have significantly boosted my technical skills and confidence. Moreover, the university provides excellent facilities like well-equipped labs and access to specialized software, which is essential for my coursework. BCU also places a strong emphasis on career development, offering a wide range of workshops, networking events, and placement opportunities. This is particularly beneficial for someone like me who is seeking internships and practical experience to bridge the gap between university studies and the professional world. Finally, the community and campus environment are welcoming and inclusive. The university supports a diverse range of student activities and societies, which has allowed me to engage with peers beyond my academic circle and develop a well-rounded university experience. Overall, I am thoroughly impressed with Birmingham City University and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an institution that combines academic excellence with real-world readiness.
The Computer Science course at Birmingham City University has been a fantastic experience so far. The curriculum is well-structured, providing a perfect mix of theoretical foundations and hands-on projects. What I appreciate most is how the course stays up-to-date with industry trends, ensuring we learn relevant skills like programming in Python and Java, data structures, algorithms, and system management with Linux. The practical approach is especially beneficial. We get to work on real-world projects, such as building software applications and working with query strings, which makes the learning process much more engaging. The faculty are knowledgeable and supportive, always willing to help with coursework or guide us through complex topics. Another strong point of the course is its focus on career development. We’re encouraged to take on internships and placements to gain industry experience, which is a great opportunity for students to build their professional profiles before graduation. Overall, I’m very satisfied with the course and would recommend it to anyone looking to develop a solid foundation in computer science while preparing for the professional world.
There are many places you can can study around the university and the library is open 24/7 which is amazing
The lectures are very insightful and the context is prepared and available before hand
Value of money and the room was quite spacious
