The annual Whatuni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs) highlight the incredible work carried out by institutions for their students. Due to Covid restrictions, this year’s awards were not collected on uni campuses as usual, but instead based on submissions from institutions, which were then judged by our special student panel.

This college has enabled me to widen my construction knowledge and to eventually find a full time job in the industry. Without this college I would still be looking for a full time job as I wouldn’t of known any future employers.
The college encourages you to constantly update your CV and puts you in contact with any companies who are looking for apprentices. When I was studying the BTEC Level 3 in Construction & The Built Environment we had employer’s come in and talk to us about what they would look in an employee. This was encouraging and helped me find a full time job.
The course tutoring is flexible and enables us to complete work whenever we have spare time during the week or at weekend. We usually have 1-2 hours or tutoring then the rest is time for our assignment.
The college facilities aren’t great at the minute as we’re working in Portakabins due to ongoing construction works. Obviously this is only temporary until the new block is finished.
My tutor offers feedback constantly and is always checking our assignment to ensure we are doing it correctly. We are always asked questions about the assignment and how we should answer questions.
I've been here for 2 years and what I learnt here is that the experience and knowledge that we receive is great. Also we get to have work experience with companies through College.
They provide with me work experience and work placements with various companies.
The thing I like the most is that If I got questions I get answers that I need. The thing I dislike is that we are going to college at 3 pm.
The facilities are great.
The support given to us is welcoming and we get to understand what we are here to study.
A very good learning environment especially this year with the new tutor/lecturer. The college has a wide range of facilities available for students and offers support when needed and allows for independent study rather than being talked at for long durations.
Currently in a porta cabin
It’s been sufficient. A lot to improve on in regards to teaching. We need more lexturers and lessons. I have paid for a course to complete without being taught.
I like the flexibility but do not enjoy not having lessons or lectures it’s all self efficient
Currently in portacabins.
The tutor support is good. However we only have one.
Mixed.. too many tutors come and go. Very hard to get stuck into work with lots of changes. We are currently in porta cabins which don't help. My current tutor tries his best and always makes time for me.
Teachers leave too often. Treated like adults
Not great. We have auto cad which is a start.
My experience so far at the college has been very enjoyable and worthwhile. It has been very beneficial with the trips and professional talks, all staff their are welcoming and helpful. I would recommend the college to others.
The college is always encouraging us to take every opportunity we receive. Our lecturer is consistently bringing in a variety of professionals for talks that would be beneficial for us, aiming to inspire ideas for our projects and potentially our careers. The college plans great visits for us to attend such as the ICA, the British Library and many other places that can assist us in our learning. Furthermore, the college has brilliant partnerships with companys’ such as Erasmus, which has enabled students to take work placements in other countries so they can transfer their skills in a working environment and build contacts that may be able to help them in the future.
The structure of the course is what I enjoy the most, I think having 3 modules helps students to take their time and gain a better understanding of their industry.
The courses at very good we have a variety of printers and computers to help with our learning. We have a series of libraries to chose from, which is helpful if one library doesn’t have what we need we can always select it from another. The course also allows us to rent out equipment that we can use in and out of college, this helps student in financial terms and with time- keeping.
The support from the college is very helpful, you can always ask any tutor even if they do not teach you, for help and they will give you feedback or help you out with any problems you may have.
I have loved every minute on this course and at the college. The college go above and beyond to help me even when my ideas are very crazy! Everyone is very supportive and helpful.
All departments are great, as a photography student I sometimes need help in other departments such as art and design and fashion, they are always willing to go above and beyond to help. In my course, work experience is actually part of the course, this benefits me by putting it on my cv and also gaining benefits for me as a photographer. The college also has great connections with other photographers and past students to help me see the reality of life as a photographer. The college is part of scheme which gives us an opportunity for us to have work experience in Barcelona too.
All course tutors are lovely, there isn’t something they can’t make happen, they are open to all questions and advice. Theory is made fun and interesting and practical is great, although the course is quite independent the workshops we do as a team is very helpful and also as I said before even with working independently the course tutor and technician is always there to help. The course tutor in photography has many connections to the industry and also has his own magazine this helps us see what the real world of photography is like and also is a great help when it comes to work experience and advice. I couldn’t fault the course!
For photography students cameras can be borrowed for the lesson or to take home as well as other camera equipment. We have a studio and a dark room which is open for us to use and a good work schedule behind it so it doesn’t get double booked. Mac’s and computers are available in the college and we also get an allowance of printing money provided by the college to print off coursework. Lights, cameras (analogue and digital) and tripods and more are always available to practice with.
Academically the college is great, when struggling with work tutors are always there as a helping hand. I haven’t had any personal issues in the college but I have had a friend who has and the college dealt with it greatly, everything from security to the principal of the college are all supportive. I know if I ever needed counselling the college would be more than helpful with support and guidance through the tough time.
Tediously dissapointing, i am just looking to graduate to be over with the course. There have been a few highlights that are memorable. I would advise students to demand more out of faculty to meet your needs as i believe they dont respect the course, that then relates to your learning. And to always challenge them in groups so your voice is heard. More voices the better!
To consult and direct our way of applying ourselves. Part of our module is to engage in an extensive professional practice to make us more viable to our profession once we leave the institution. Also to construct photographic CV's tailored to our profession.
The lack of stability in classrooms, this year there is no department for us to focus in like the previous years. I believe that has become peril to our focus and motivation. Also thr consistancy in teachers, as they have a come and go relationship with enployment, that is also very unsettling. What i do like is my tutor trys his best and uses a lot of his personal networks to accommodate for what the instituition lacks, i firmly believe without him the course will collapse. I like only what my tutor provides as every year the department, and course maintainance gets less and less each year.
At the moment terrible.
Tutor is very supportive, accommodates outside of class just as effective. Always sends daily or weekly updates in relations to course and general creative practice.
Amazing. I’ve loved every second. The tutors are amazing, and are always there if you need them. The facilities that are available to you are very pleasant. The atmosphere in class is incredibly wonderful. Everyone just joins together to work on everything and anything.
They provide talks with photographers and different people from the photography industry, which helps us with insight into the world we would potentially become apart of and gives us a lot of advice on our projects. The tutors dedicate a lot of time and effort to help and support every student. We get to be apart of a 2 week work placement abroad, doing a job placement to do with photography, which helps us learn more skills, meet new people, open other avenues within the photography industry and to explore a new place of culture.
I love how enthusiastic everyone is, students and teachers. The dynamics are so much better compared to secondary school, as you’re treated as an equal and with respect and maturity. The energy is high and amazing within classes. Everyone gets involved in projects and the atmosphere is so good, it makes learning enjoyable. To be honest, I don’t dislike anything.
The facilities are quite good. I love the fact that we are able to have studios and dark rooms within our department. I think the experience on the course would be different without them being available to us. I also like that we have our learning centre, iCreate, which enables us to access the colleges Apple Macs. They have useful softwares, like photoshop and indesign, which being a photographer, these are things I need and will use.
Tutor support is incredible. I couldn’t fault a single one. They’re there if you need advice, help or just a general good old chat. They’re not just a tutor, they’re friends and it’s nice to know that they’re there if you’re ever in need of help or support. You can rely on them to be honest and fair and I think that’s a good balance for the feedback side of things.
My overall experience is that I have had the right people to help me. I have the confidence that I can get thought this year with the right help and support.
The college works hard to finding placements for those who don’t know how to go about doing so. There is a department in the college that helps students if they get stuck or need help with looking for placements. These group of people are very helpful and they helped me when I needed to fill in a form and gave me advice on how I can get a new passport, as I needed one quick for the college trip I’m going on. The college put together trips to different places around the world to get the students to experience what it is like to work and explore outside of the UK.
I like the way my tutor puts together lessons and is always prepared with handouts to do with the lesson and shows us videos and websites that are relevant to our course. All the tutors do one to ones with the students to see and help them in any way they can. At the moment some lessons are in an open space called ICreate and it can be a bit destructing lessoning to other lesson going on around us.
There is a dark room that I love to go in and has all the equipment that you need. We have a studio that is used for photo shoots. At the back of the college is D block which is meant to be for us photography students as well as other students from courses but it is being renevated so our darkroom and studio was moved to different parts of the college. Where they are now is okey but it is a bit more smaller but it still does the job. We have a library but I don’t think it’s all that great.
The support I get is great. I have learning difficulties so when I get feedback from the tutors, if I don’t understand something then they talk to me one on one and explain what I need to do. I also get a one to one teacher in the college and learning support so I’m very pleased with the help I get.
