The university does provide an overall supportive and helpful environment for the students, but the career support can be done better.
The actual teaching time in terms of hours is not enough and I think some work has to be done regarding that . The students can definitely use that time.
The rooms are definitely small, and the reception can definitely be better; there is no proper storage, and the washroom is also small. The value for money just isn't there, and it is just too expensive.
Good location being so close to the city centre. I wish the library was open longer and there were more study spaces in the main building because the main building and the library are too busy in the day.
Not enough teaching hours each week, we end up having to teach ourselves because lecturers can’t cover 40+ slides in an hour.
Good location, especially for first years.
The campus needs to be routinely cleaned and most toilet facilities have watered down diluted soap. The SU tends to gravitate towards hosting South Asian events, leaving behind the other ethnic minorities and their inclusion to such events.
Lovely lectures, clinics and variety of specialty clinics. The Optometry Simulators are amazing.
I really like the the ambience of the campus, which is a really friendly and welcoming environment.
The course is taught really well, where in person doubt sessions are also being conducted.
It is a safe environment for students choosing university accommodation.
Best Aspects of My Uni Experience at Aston University: Great Learning Environment: Aston University offers a dynamic and engaging academic atmosphere. The lectures and seminars are well-structured, and the professors are knowledgeable and approachable, which makes learning both insightful and rewarding. Supportive Community: I’ve found that the university fosters a sense of community, and it's great to be part of a diverse student body. The campus has a vibrant social scene, which helps balance academics with extracurricular activities. Excellent Facilities: Aston has top-notch facilities, such as modern libraries, research centres, and study spaces. These are all fantastic for both independent learning and group work. Areas for Improvement: Better Support During the First Days: The transition to university can be tough, especially for first-year students. More comprehensive support during the early days, including workshops or one-on-one guidance for international students, could make the start less overwhelming. Support for Exceptional Circumstances: Sometimes life throws unexpected challenges, and it’s crucial to have access to clear and empathetic support when dealing with personal issues or exceptional circumstances. The process for requesting help or extensions could be streamlined and made more accessible, ensuring students feel supported during tough times. Clearer Communication of Academic Rules: While Aston provides many resources, there could be better clarity around academic rules and expectations. For example, understanding how assessment policies, plagiarism rules, or extensions work could be communicated more clearly to avoid confusion. Providing easy-to-follow guides, or reminders in emails and on the student portal, would help students stay on top of academic expectations. Top Tips for Aston University: More Orientation Programs: A more tailored orientation program for international and first-year students would really help them adjust to life at Aston. Providing detailed guides, peer support groups, or welcome activities would ease the transition. Improved Accessibility to Services: Sometimes, students don’t know where to turn when they face challenges, whether academic or personal. Having a more visible and easy-to-navigate support network, including mental health services, could ensure no one feels isolated. Clearer Communication About Exceptional Circumstances and Academic Rules: It would be helpful if the process for dealing with personal challenges and understanding academic rules was clearly communicated from day one. That way, students can confidently reach out for help or know exactly what to do in case they face any issues.
Work Placements/Internships or Career Services: Work Placements and Internships: I haven’t yet had the opportunity to engage in a work placement or internship, but I know that Aston University provides excellent career services that help students connect with potential employers. It would be great to see more internships or industry links embedded within the course itself, so students can gain work experience before graduation. Career Services: The career services team at Aston is supportive. They offer workshops, CV reviews, and interview prep, which are helpful when preparing for the job market. However, I would appreciate even more connections with companies, and perhaps more events where students can meet professionals in their field. Course Content: I would rate the course content as 4/5. The course is well-structured and covers a range of relevant topics. However, there could be more opportunities for practical, hands-on learning and real-world case studies that tie directly into the theory we’re studying. Work Placements and Internships: I’d rate this 3/5 since there are opportunities for placements, but more integrated programs could give students more chances to gain real-world experience during the course itself. Lecturers and Teaching Quality: I would rate 5/5. Most lecturers are knowledgeable, approachable, and encourage active participation. They are keen to support students and provide constructive feedback. Career Prospects: I’d rate 4/5. The university offers strong career services and connections, but I think more industry-focused opportunities could boost job prospects for students. More partnerships with companies could enhance opportunities in specific fields. Tutor Contact Time: I’d rate this 4/5. I feel like there’s a good amount of contact time with tutors, but it could vary depending on the module or department. More one-on-one sessions or office hours would be helpful. Subject Facilities: I would rate 5/5. Aston’s facilities, such as the libraries, study spaces, and specialized labs, are great for the subject I’m studying. The resources are easy to access, and the campus is well-equipped for research and study. Overall Rating: Based on the ratings above, I would give 4/5. Overall, Aston University offers a solid academic experience, but there’s room for improvement in providing more work placement opportunities and clearer integration of industry experience into the curriculum.
Most: Security and Location: The location of the hall is great, and I feel safe and secure. It's close to campus, shops, and other student amenities, making it very convenient. The 24/7 security measures and key-card access are reassuring. Social Opportunities: The communal areas are well-designed for socializing and meeting people. There are regular events organized for students, which really help foster a community atmosphere. Least: Room Size and Amenities: The rooms are smaller than I expected for the price, and some of the amenities (like kitchen space and storage) could be improved. It can feel a little cramped, especially when sharing with multiple flatmates. Wi-Fi Speed: While the Wi-Fi is generally available, it can slow down during peak times, which is frustrating for studying or streaming. A more reliable internet connection would be a big improvement. Top Tips for Future Students: Get to Know Your Hall Community: There are great opportunities to meet people and form friendships. Attend social events organized by your hall and get to know your flatmates early on. Check Your Room for Issues Early: Do a thorough check of your room when you move in, and report any issues to the property management team as soon as possible so they can be fixed. Use the Communal Areas: Take full advantage of the communal spaces provided for studying or relaxing. These areas can also help you connect with other students.
The best parts are the facilities and the location. The location is ideal because it’s right in the city centre surrounded by lots of things to do, and the facilities are good as it ensures we have what we need to succeed.
I like the people who teach our course as their research is quite interesting and they accommodate their lectures to allow for us to ask questions or take part in discussions etc.
They provide many facilities for students to learn and relax however I do think some things such as labs are unnecessary.
I think tutoring and labs should be online as they’re deducted from attendance even if you do the task before and don’t need to go.
Only concern is that there is no subsidised meal options or food counters apart from the cafés in And around the university campus.
I think I’m happy with the resources available. I’m yet to explore the employment and placement part of the university.
The best aspect of Aston University is that it provides lots of opportunities that help prepare for life after graduation. They push the importance of doing a year on placement and well support students to find, prepare and complete them. Something Aston University could improve on is it's support for students with physical disabilities, making the building and course content more accessible.
The contact hours for this course are reasonable due to there being plenty of reading material that is recommended by lecturers, and provided for by the library. Most of the lectures are in-class, with one or two workshops a week that may be online. Online workshops are generally seen as positive as it makes it easier for students to ask questions or get lecturers to go over certain topics again.
The halls are great for accessibility to the main campus, it is less than a 5 minute walk to the main building and the city centre is a very walkable distance. The halls themselves are fitted with all the right amenities, however some of these could do with refurbishing. Another issue with the halls is that the accessible rooms for students with disabilities are priced as a 'premium room' which is not fair for students with physical disabilities that may not be able to afford this extra charge that they need.
The best aspect of my university experience is the constant student support available at all times, which really makes a difference. The variety of study spaces is also fantastic, as it helps meet my different needs for self-study. As for the worst aspect, honestly, there's nothing that's been too bad – everything has been quite manageable.
The best aspect of my course is the enthusiasm of the lecturers and how their knowledge is really useful for my field of study. There's nothing really "worst," but there are a few courses that are harder to grasp, so they do require more time and effort to understand.
What I like most about the uni's halls is that they're really close to the campus and supermarkets, which makes commuting and getting necessities very convenient. What I am not satisfied is that there aren't many washing machines in the laundry room, so sometimes I have to wait.

Annie Sanger-Davis is the best course leader EVER!! If you can join this course
The best thing is that everyone is always very keen to help you and you never feel left alone. The worst thing is probably the distance from town.
