Studying at Sheffield Hallam University offers a dynamic and varied experience shaped by academic opportunities, social life, and the realities of modern student living. However, like any university, the experience is not without its challenges. This reflection explores both the best and worst aspects of studying at Sheffield Hallam, drawing on student experiences, institutional strengths, and broader contextual factors such as cost of living and academic delivery. The Arts building is by far the best thing about this university and my chosen course. The studios and performance spaces are top notch. You can even have access to so many instruments. So many nice facilities but access to them could be improved by extending the accessible hours. The building closes way too early (9 PM). Especially on the weekends (4 PM). Central location. The uni food is pretty mid so I choose Tesco meal deals more often unfortunately but if you’re not picky you can eat for 2 pounds at the beckett kitchen. Again wish they stayed open longer. Can’t say much about the union other than there aren’t many societies to choose from compared to the other unis.

I really like my research lab and supervisor. They are very insightful, has very good intuition and research ideas. I'm also really grateful for the opportunity to work with leading researchers on very interesting projects exploring how deep learning can improve healthcare management. What I dislike is that very high rent of university-owned student accommodation. It's so counterintuitive and unexpected that private student accommodation in Sheffield is many times cheaper.

i love the community - societies are great, i love how i’ve met so many people and get to do a course i love, the worst aspect is maybe how many days were in as it doesn’t see very worth it and facilities/resources for art students as we got £150 from an exhibition last year and they kept the money for “resources” however we’ve not seen any

YSJ is incredibly central to town, unlike UoY, and is within walking distance of a lot of what you're going to want from the city. As a language and linguistics student, I think the facilities are really good, and all the tutors are lovely. My experience with student support has been okay, although not the greatest, but when I was having counselling sessions with the wellbeing team, the person I had was lovely and really helped. It's also a very small campus; much more like a sixth form college campus, which is really useful and makes going between classes a lot easier.

There are excellent lecturers and student support services (particularly academic skills). The campus has a good feel and has a lot of outdoor seating which will be nice when the weather is warm. Lecture rooms are good but the seats are very uncomfortable. There is little impact from the students' union, for example there was no 'refreshers fayre' for January intake students, which also impacts the student life score.

Oxford Brookes University offers a supportive learning environment with passionate lecturers and modern facilities.
