What students say about journalism

All staff in university is eager to help you with any kind of questions or problems. At lectures teachers are really engaging and supportive. You never notice how quick time flies during lectures. Especially, before any assignments you are given every detail about it, so you are well prepared and not scared at all. Birkbeck suggests a lot of opportunities for busy social life, where you can meet lots of enthusiastic people, and opportunities for future career such as additional workshops, professional guests, etc. I love being a part of this community!

What students say about journalism

SOAS is a place where people are truly passionate about making a difference, and this has inspired me every day. Whether it's through joining debates or attending student-led events focused on social justice, the atmosphere here aligns with my own commitment to equitable development. Being part of a community that challenges norms and pushes for change makes my experience here feel impactful on a personal level.SOAS’s emphasis on equitable development attracts students from diverse backgrounds, and many have unique ideas that cross traditional academic boundaries. Establishing a fund or support system specifically for interdisciplinary student-led projects would encourage more collaboration. For example, initiatives that mix economics, politics, and cultural studies could benefit from university-backed resources, mentorship, and even project showcase opportunities. One of the most challenging, I've faced at SOAS—and something I didn’t anticipate—has been the occasional disconnect between the ideals of social justice that SOAS champions and the actual support systems in place for students. For example, SOAS fosters a culture of activism and encourages students to challenge the status quo, but when it comes to supporting student-led initiatives or even simply navigating the administrative process for events, the bureaucratic hurdles can feel restrictive. There’s often a lot of red tape around organizing events or securing university support for new initiatives. This can feel contradictory to the university’s ethos of empowering students to make change, as it sometimes discourages students from taking action simply because the process is too complicated or time-consuming. It’s a bit of an irony, really. While the academic environment is very forward-thinking, the structures behind the scenes are sometimes rigid and slow-moving. In my own experience, I’ve seen passionate ideas from fellow students stall simply because of an administrative bottleneck, which feels out of place in an environment as progressive as SOAS. This disconnect isn’t something you’d necessarily see on the surface, but it’s a frustration many students who try to push for change internally eventually encounter. This experience has taught me that aligning values with practice is complex, even in institutions committed to social justice. It's an eye-opener on how systemic challenges can exist even within progressive spaces, and it’s made me more aware of the importance of efficient support systems when trying to effect real change.

Positive aspects: University buildings, classrooms, teachers. Negative aspects: University location, support for students. The start time of morning classes has changed due to the long distance for students. More support for students.

What students say about journalism

I'm an optometry student entering my third year in September 2024. The lecturers are very nice and supportive; however, the optometry students in Group C are extremely rude, disrespectful, and lack any sort of manners. Many of them speak poorly of you if you fall behind or are slow in your routine, and they refuse to collaborate despite knowing that practice is essential for skill improvement.

I can't say much for now since I only started about a month ago but so far I am enjoying my course the university itself feels welcoming. Teachers are supportive on our education. That's all I can say for now but I like kingston university not to mention being able to visit other campuses. So far the rating I would give kingston uni is 8.3/10

The best thing about the university is the staff. The teachers and tutors are great and they really support my learning and elevate my thinking. The worst thing would be the cost of supplies at the art shop.

What students say about journalism

With the SMT once again announcing a detrimental restructure to the university, roughly around 300 teaching staff are being threatened with redundancies if they are viewed as not making a 'valuable' contribution to Goldsmiths. A vast majority of departments have been threatened with teaching and module cuts, including English, once again. It is ironic that they are saying they want to make back/ save around 20 million, yet they are looking to have an AI centre whilst neglecting the humanities departments that reside at the very heart of Goldsmiths. They do not have much care for practising free speech on campus as the SMT wanted to 'arrest' the group of us that had 1.) occupied a building on campus in protest against the way the university has conducted their weak response to the ongoing genocide in Palestine and 2.) those that actually took part in the protests that occurred on campus. How can you label your university as a 'creative powerhouse' and a 'melting pot' of ideas when you've conducted yourself in such a backward manner? The welfare team has little regard for you. I had applied for a hardship bursary, yet I was met with a foodbank voucher that could only be used on the week it was issued and for a place that was miles away from accom and only open for 4 hours on a Friday. Do not come to this uni if you are seeking a place that values academic integrity and the preservation of your course; alongside your welfare as a student. It's a shock that they can even call themselves an institution.
