University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I'm grateful for the immense support from BCU student services, career advisors and my tutors, specially my project supervisor. Thanks to the practical, industry focused course and interdisciplinary modules, I secured a placement at an Aerospace company after my second year and landed a job after graduation in one of the largest Oil & Gas companies of the world.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The University has all the latest equipment and facilities available, there are plenty of labs with PCs and Macs alike, dedicated labs for Engineering, Media and Production are also there. Recently, lots of things like paying fee and a central portal have been introduced online.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
The Student Services team is amazing and probably the best thing about BCU. I've personally used their online system many times and have found it to be excellent. Student Support is available around the clock and the teams are quick to respond and meet. Regular sessions are held focusing on Student Support.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
BCU has a vibrant Student Union but due to the number of different campuses, things can get a bit complicated. Until recently, there was no major SU presence in the City Centre campus, which left us a bit isolated.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Birmingham is in the heart of England, a cosmopolitan city which has something to offer for everyone. The cost of living is affordable, Birmingham is special because it has lots of shopping arcades, leisure activities, great parks, restaurants, pubs and canals. It's a fantastic place to live and work in and has great transport links to nearby cities. Frequent trains and buses make every corner of Birmingham accessible.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
BCU has lots of clubs and societies to choose from, whatever your interest. There are many events throughout the year and the Freshers Fair is a great opportunity to know more. The Students Union supports you in starting up your own society and provides funding as well.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
The courses are very well structured and equip you with a blend of different skills needed in todays job market. Through group assignments, technical reports and presentations, you develop excellent analytic skills. Lecturers are accessible and highly trained professionals who place great focus on industry.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
The interdisciplinary course prepares you well for industry and makes your CV stand out. The career advisors are helpful and assist students looking for internships, placements and graduate jobs. I finished my course at BCU in May and secured a job just two months later at Shell in Muscat, Oman.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
BCU used to have exclusive accommodation for its students such as Jennens Court but now there are limited options available. The prices are sky-rocketing and quite expensive, some of the older halls of residence are in desperate need of refurbishment.
