Beautiful ancient university with lovely surroundings (beach, parks, botanic gardens etc.) and lovely independent cafes on campus. It is very supportive, understanding and has a real nurturing feel towards students. There are plenty of clubs and societies to get involved in, and I would say for the Aberdeen experience, you get out of it what you put in.

I would definitely appreciate more instrumental tuition time. But tutors are generally very helpful and are willing to go through any aspect of your course with them during office hours or by arranging another time to meet throughout the week.

Extremely helpful during covid lockdowns/isolations. We were brought free food parcels. Was also great to have an ensuite during covid times but also as you are only getting to know the people you are living with, it is nice to have your own space.

The best aspects would be the support from the teachers in my first year for studies, I wasn’t enjoying my course at the start and the teachers supported me and got me back on track. The social aspect is such a positive as well, getting to meet new people! The worst aspects would be having to travel back and forth to Aberdeen, it’s about a three hour drive from where I originally live which means I go months without seeing my family or girlfriend. The accommodation has not been what I was expecting either, although I can’t praise the social area enough in Hillhead. The rooms haven’t been what I expected maintenance wise from the moment I stepped through the door, especially when my parents have to pay £160 a week for the room. My bathroom extraction fan broke, the shower was very dirty when we I first moved in, my window builds up condensation and has taken some of the paint off the wall, and the heating is very poor. There’s not much that can help my situation, it’s just the way it is unfortunately. But overall I would say my Aberdeen University has been okay and I look forward very much to next year where I have the opportunity to have more choice with my classes for my course!

The best part about the course is that fortunately I don’t have to do any online lectures, which means I can enjoy the lectures in person and socialise with the people in my class. Being allowed those extra 5 minutes between classes starting and finishing is also a big help to travel around the campus. My lectures are very busy people and I understand completely when they cannot reply to me straight away, but when they do their feedback is always helpful and very supportive. The worst aspects would be the mandatory classes and not having as much freedom in first year to choose certain things, but i understand that’s how first year is run, to allow people to get a full grasp of everything at offer or asked from them for their course. I’ve had some pretty bad experiences as well with some of my music tutors for my private lessons but that’s been sorted for the most part.
