OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
Brilliant! The University isn't the best in the UK but it does what it says on the tin. So far the course has been great, me and my fellow students love it and when we are tired of the campus or the local town we just hop on a bike to a traditional country pub or a train into london - we get best of both worlds.
Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
The University's ethos is all about employability - every course (I believe) has elements of this built in, from graduate skills workshops and modules to workingn alongside companies in your final year. The University also actively encourages placements and there is a department dedicated to ensuring anyone that want's a placement should get access to one. The University brands itself on being business-facing, which although is a self coined title does give you an idea of where their priorities lie.
My course is very much practitioner based, so we work alongside employees and employers, it is job focussed in every way and I have had a number of job offers whilst studying.
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Their enthusiasm, the variety in personalities and the different skills sets.
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The student's union is pretty good. They organise a Raise and Give (RAG) volunteering week every year and their presence is felt on campus. The SU team is fantastic, always enthusing students and have activities on but I have been very dissapointed with this year's president (hence the 4 stars instead of 5)
Accommodation
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
The accommodation on campus is really great. Very modern, most rooms have en suite and are located really close to all you need. They are building more accommodation too, so I think if you are a 2nd year or 3rd year you will be able to live on campus too.
Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Sports facilities are fantastic, next to none - gym on both campuses, climbing wall, swimming, racquet sports etc. loads of clubs too.
LRC has books, journals, newspapers, magazines, novels, plus 1000s of PCs, MACs and design software free to use.
Students Union venue is also really modern, the Uni plays host to Slam Dunk festival and Smirnoff nights to name a few festivals and events.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Hatfield isn't the best place in the world, but it's got all the services you need: an Aldi, Tesco, Asda, co-op plus a large indoor Mall with cinema, restaurants, Nandos, TK Maxx, superdrug etc.
Also, just opposite the Station (1mile from campus), lies the quaint Old-Hatfield, where Hatfield House is located with lots of really nice pubs.
The town is pretty safe too, the Uni is the safest in the East of England, it's pretty cycle friendly too with a dedicated cycle path to Welwyn-garden city and St Albans. Not the best place at night as there isn't much going on off campus but most students either stay at the Student's Union or pop on a public transport to St Albans, Stevenage or into London (30mins away)!
...basically, could be better but not as bad as people think!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Staff are generally nice, it depends on if you catch them on a good day or not. Most if not all admin and support staff are also great, I've not had a bad experience with staff.
There is a GP surgery on campus which is really useful, they are friendly there too, and a counselling service for those that need it.
