Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
Overall, my experience with the University of Glasgow is very positive! The courses are challenging, but well supported - both by the teaching staff itself and other academic departments. The learning experience and campus life is friendly, welcoming and socially peaceful. Glasgow is an international, diverse city with a wide range of cultural, social and academic offerings. I'm glad that I decided to come here for studying!
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Most of the facilities are very well maintained providing everything that is necessary for successful learning. In addition, the university's main building creates a special atmosphere.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
In my opinion, the university provides excellent support - both academic and personal. There is an diverse offer of tutorial courses, the teaching staff is dedicated and close to the students. Also, there are various places to go providing help with every-day related issues.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
I don't know much about the students' union, but from what I know they seem highly dedicated and represent the university's community very well.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
From my accommodation the university can be reached within a relaxed 20 minutes walk, less by bus. The campus is centrally located in the West End area and provides perfect access to all amenities of daily needs and social life.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There is an overwhelming offer of societies and sports.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Most courses use a mix of methods, e.g. lectures, seminars, workshops, laboratories etc. The periods of the courses are rather short (6-9 weeks) and therefore intense. The support of teaching staff is excellent - expectations are communicated very clearly.
As written assignments to finish courses have to be handed in while the next courses have already started, it can be very stressful and the workload may be overwhelming.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
14
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
There are lots of offerings in the field of employability. I'm not using it often, but there is a regular newsletter about workshops, (networking) events and seminars for skills development, etc.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
The accommodation is rather small, providing studio apartments for around 70 students. The location is ideally located between the city centre and university campus, so most facilities for everyday life can be reached by walking within 20 minutes. With around 830 pounds per month the costs are rather high, but including well maintained community areas, an on-site gym, reception service, security etc.
