Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
My University time has been a combination of fun memories, learning opportunities, growing and a finding a community that I am comfortable in away from my home (Tanzania). I have made life long friends who make a great part of my support network. I enjoy my programme and the facilities, support service available for me to excel in the Politics field. My biggest achievement has been being elected as School Officer for the Hertfordshire Law School and having a chance to practice my leadership skills. I can't think of a better place that I would become this proud to be a student.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Fairly good to foster a positive life on campus. We have two great Learning Resource Centres (libraries) on both campuses, University run buses including a free shuttle bus that runs between the campuses and student parking for 24hours. There are variety of facilities to support student mental health and wellbeing with two student affordable gyms to help keep fit.
We also have communal places that I have an opportunity to catch up with friends.
I am happy with how the resources are distributed amongst the two campuses.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
As an International Student, I feel confident about the Hertfordshire community around with a 'I am happy to help' attitude that most people show. There are varieties of support services available all year, 24 hours run online and on campus.
Academically, each lecturer in my school runs a drop-in session once every week and I can always book for an appointment with them. Our assessment feedback is usually very thorough and clear to help me improve on my academic flaws.
Also during holidays, I've had an opportunity to book for a skype session with my lecturer concerning my coursework.
The most interesting part is feedback that students give to each other on presentation sessions. I find this really fun and helpful.
I am also part of a Sprint Undergraduate Women support network that has been supporting my career growth through sharing and receiving advice within the network.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The Students' Union has been a crucial part of the Hertfordshire community. It has made university life more interesting, relaxing and most of all a platform for students to air our their opinions.
I am also happy that the Students' Union has also been part of my career growth.
In 2016 I got elected as a School Officer of the Hertfordshire Law School where I work with 20 class representatives in voicing out the experience and concerns of students. I attend the Students' Union Council Meetings and its been great to know how the Students' Union works hard to represent all students.
I also love the support services it provides especially free printing facilities and great activities on campus to help students reunite with friends.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Hatfield is a town with a good number of an elderly population which makes it quiet and have little amount of activities going on. On a positive side, it is not a destructive environment for a student.
Also, Hertfordshire is 25 minutes away from London by train which gives lots of options to hangout. We are also close to St Albans and Wewlyn Garden City which are other students favourite spots.
Because its a quiet town with no much to do, it usually makes me get involved more in University activities and maybe sometimes suggest for new activities.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
We have an option of over 80 societies and they bring a special vibe in our community. Its a great feeling to have an option of being part of anything!
I became part of the Law Society because I am passionate about legal issues. It runs varieties of activities including visiting courts, magistrates and last year it became more diverse by inviting discussions on legal issues concerning other parts of the world.
I and my friends started up a travelling society that has brought together students with same passion to explore the world. The Students' Union has been provided training, consultation and facilities on running it.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I enjoy workshops, tutorials and assessment methods in the politics programme.
Workshops give students an opportunity to explore topics and concepts inviting wider and open discussion of students with guidance of the lecturer.
Tutorials have been a platform to enhance skills related to our course.
The mode of assessment that I really enjoy are presentations, course works and group activities that are relevant to a politics course.
On the other hand, I have less preference of online lectures that limit my interaction with the lecturer especially when I have to ask for further clarification on concepts.
Also, I find the academic year really short compared to the demanding content of such a heavy course as Politics and International Relations.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
20
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
The university has given me opportunities to develop my skills through the career fairs, career workshops, drop-ins which I have made use of. I also experienced great career transformation through the Sprint Undergraduate Women Programme that was run by the Career department.
It is a devolved university mission to increase my credibility in the labour market. From lecturers, to the Students' Union, Academic Societies and the careers department; they all foster opportunities and skills that have helped me evolve into a 'prospectus future employee'.
I am confident to take into any work place the attributes I have developed. Its just this year I will be applying for placements and I look forward to it.
