Coventry University is a great place to study. Located right in the heart of the city of Coventry, it is perhaps the most central location in England, making it possible to travel almost everywhere within a good time range. It’s student life is vibrant with a fantastic lively city to hang around and take some coffee in the day to its raging night life which should make every week a memorable one. But what is most astonishing is Coventry University’s student support. CU takes student welfare at its uttermost priority, so much so that they have welfare support team, a personal coach and even a 24 hours security team. It also offers a wide range of support for the cost of living crisis, namely: abolishing car park fee within the university and offering a £1 breakfast for its students. Course wise, I would say that CU has a plethora of options to choose from, I am studying BA (Hons) International Relations and I love the fact that they removed examination in this module to make it more relevant. Examination in a humanity course is unnecessary as the humanities sector strive to develop a more in depth analytical framework rather than memorising theories. Although they have thoroughly rethink their strategies to make the course more relevant, I would say that it’s course is less engaging, i.e. group project, personal tutoring and interactiveness is lacking. Most of the time, CU course (in my experience) only lets you sit in lecture halls and seminar room to listen to lecturer speaking and do a little bit of group work (in the case of a seminar session) and that’s about it; and lecturer tends to assess our compatibility only on courseworks and nothing else, i.e. group work, activeness, etc. Other than that, Coventry University is a great place to start off your higher educational journey! Although with such strategic location, amazing welfare system and a good assessment strategy, CU lacks engagement with its course, which could led to its downfall.

Course in Coventry University is offered at a diverse range. In specific to the course i’m studying, CU has relatively done a good job in terms of its relevance and future prospect. During Covid-19, classes are taught in a hybrid model, i.e. accessible both online and offline, with face mask being mandatory in its campuses. During those time, university courses are extremely disengaging, which meant that no group work (even online) and other interactive exist. Post-covid saw the recovery of some of those clause, which are exciting yet not better enough. As I said in the previous question, Most of the time, CU course (in my experience) only lets you sit in lecture halls and seminar room to listen to lecturer speaking and do a little bit of group work (in the case of a seminar session) and that’s about it; and lecturer tends to assess our compatibility only on courseworks and nothing else, i.e. group work, activeness, etc. In regards to course hours, it is mostly taught within 10-12 hours in-contact teaching which is pretty descent, considering self study is needed to succeed on the course. Lecturer wise, some of them are very helpful, i.e concern about its students wellbeing and would often offer drop-in session for its students. Some others are plain, and does not offer help to its students. However, although with many flaws, CU does a really good job on its assessment criteria which makes it more relevant with its course, in my case, they removed assessments for humanities course as humanities tends to focus on deepening the idea of an analytical framework rather than memorising theories. Other than that, CU should make more improvement in regards to its teaching engagement.

What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
During my first year, I’ve stayed in the university halls of residence and are generally satisfied during my tenancy there. Although it can be quite pricy to stay there, in many cases I have thoroughly enjoyed my stay there as it is very close to university (10 minutes walk) and has a generally close location to the city centre (15 minutes). Room wise, it was spacious with plenty of drawers and cabinets to store our clothes and luggages which makes it spectacular. Lighting in the room was also good which makes it a cozy place to study. Toilets are clean and are thoroughly inspected. Kitchen was massive and provide plenty of spaces for each occupants to store their ingredients in the cooler, fridge and dry cabinets. Security wise, it was extremely strict, which is good and bad at the same time. Good because we know that we are secured, bad because it can be hard to get our friends in to hang-out with us. Reception also has a tendency of being very helpful which notify us on any deliveries of packages. With such many good things about it, it also has some flaws, namely: TV is not working in our common space (kitchen) and that the Halls of Residence is located just near Hilfields, which are known by the Coventry locals to be one of the most dangerous place to be in during night time. So walking to our accommodation in the night could be quite dangerous. Other than that, my time there was splendid and I would definitely recommend.
