The support I receive from my department is exceptional. As a PhD student, I have a shared office and a laptop provided and I can email any of the staff with any queries or issues I have and they will be resolved very quickly. The campus has improved quite substantially since I did my undergraduate degree here and in a. positive way. The location of the university is great with easy access to Manchester, the Lake District, and the Peak District. There are numerous student activities one can partake in giving a great breadth of choice. The elected officers in the Students' Union (SU) are exceptional and do care about student welfare. The salaried members of the SU give the impression that they don't care about student welfare. Last year I captained a sports team and had to raise a complaint with the SU. The SUs handling of the complaint was abysmal from start to finish. If I didn't push the complaint nothing would have been done. I sat down with the SU to explain this and they were receptive and started to implement changes but I am unsure if these have come to fruition yet.

I get adequate supervision from my supervisors who are experts in their field. I rarely have an issue with accessing journals or books. IT issues are resolved very quickly with the help of our IT specialist. I would love more training from the department in both soft and technical skills as it feels like we are left to learn how to be a researcher on our own sometimes.
