University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I have really enjoyed my time at university so far. I have especially enjoyed being involved in sports clubs and societies, as well as having several internships with the university that have given me a lot of employable skills that I can take with me into the workplace.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
There is a wide range of facilities available at Glasgow, which are kept in good condition and cleaned regularly.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
There is a good support network with staff, such as lecturers, who make themselves available for students at designated times/places by holding office hours for students to drop by. Each student is also assigned an advisor of studies, however I have not had any contact with my advisor but they are available should I have any questions about my course or other options.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
There are 2 student unions at the university, each offering different things for students. The GUU has various venues, including their own nightclub, with a billiards room, a debate chamber, and a bar as well. The QMU offers a range of smaller rooms, however they hold quizzes and vintage fairs and have a more relaxed atmosphere generally than the other union. There are food and drink facilities available at both unions. There are also elections held every year for student representatives to be on the council and committees for each union, so there is plenty of opportunity to run for positions.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
There is a lot of accommodation around the university, with plenty of private accommodation to choose from as well as the university halls. The university is easily accessible by foot, bus, subway, train and even car, although parking can be a bit harder. There are a variety of shops and supermarkets around the university, on the way back to accommodations.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There are a lot of societies and sports clubs. They make up a large part of university life for me. There is a lot of information online, as well as at the Fresher's and Refresher's fairs in September and January for new and returning students. There are a wide variety of societies, with the option to also start up a new society if there is demand. The sports clubs are well run, with access to minibuses and fantastic gym facilities, as well as multiple sports pitches.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
My courses are taught with an hour lecture and an hour seminar each week for every course. I find this a very useful way of learning, as the lecturer provides reading lists to accompany their course in order to have a deeper understanding of the topic before discussions in seminars. It also gives enough time during the week to complete readings and assignments.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
6
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
There are a lot of career-driven activities that are offered by the university. The careers department sends out weekly emails with upcoming events and latest news on jobs. There are also multiple internships that are available to apply for through the university, which are updated regularly so there is always something available. The university also offers employability courses, such as their Professional Skills Programme and their Graduate Skills Program.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
The location of my accommodation is about 20 minutes walk from the university which is a good distance. However, for the distance it could be a bit cheaper but it is in very good condition. It is near a public transport hub so it is easy to access the university as well as other parts of the city. The area is quite loud with a lot of people around and a busy road, however the area does not feel unsafe in any way.
