I don’t think I’ll ever regret moving to Brighton for University. Coming from Sligo in Ireland, I needed to be in a city close to the sea and even though it’s a pebbled beach, I still feel somewhat at home. Going to the University of Brighton allowed me to meet both very liked minded and different individuals. Brighton is a place where everybody can express who they are free of judgement. Studying pharmacy is a challenge but that’s what was expected. There will always be some things that could improve the course but all in all I’m quite content. Sometimes I do wish my course was a bit more organised in terms of exams and distribution of coursework. I do however think most of my lecturers are top class and very good at teaching us what we need to know. Uni is good but the night life in Brighton is great. There will always be a pub or club to go to any day of the week. If you’re ever visiting go to either Chalk, Green Door Store or Dead Wax Social. Avoid Shooshh. Made that mistake too many times. I do wish Brighton was a cheaper place to live in but we could say that for anywhere in England. £3.60 for a 24hr student bus ticket is ridiculous. As an Irish student I am not entitled to a maintenance loan so at times it can be a struggle. I always love going back home to Sligo but I can honestly say I’ve never really been that homesick while living here. Brighton is a great place to study if you want to have a sick time while studying what you love.

Pharmacy in the University of Brighton is taught in person. For the first three years of the course, the content is taught through cases such as Conjunctivitis, Peptic Ulcer Disease, Lung Cancer, Renal Failure… so on. Within each case, we learn a variety of topics such as the pharmacology of drugs, the anatomy, treatment options and how a pharmacist consults a patient. Throughout the course we also take part in workshops where we learn how to dispense medication and the monitoring/treatment of various illnesses. Lab classes allow us to experience the pharmaceutical industry and placements give us a first hand insight into consulting and treating patients. It is a very full on course which requires a lot of time self learning. A normal week could be filled with hours of lectures but that makes the partying at the weekend all the more enjoyable. I have managed to maintain a part time job in a pharmacy alongside my studies which has not only helped me financially but with my exams and the understanding of community pharmacy. I would advise anyone who studies pharmacy to uptake a job in a community setting. It will help!
