Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
One of the challenges I've encountered is the limited resources available. For instance, the access to research materials can be constrained, making it challenging for students to delve deep into academic pursuits. Additionally, while the university strives to provide affordable dining options, there's room for improvement by ensuring more competitive restaurant prices suited to students' budgets. Furthermore, the location of facilities such as microwaves is limited, hindering their convenience in preparing meals. Improving funding would not only address these concerns but also enhance the overall student experience and support academic success.
Another challenge I’ve encountered is the limited social activities compared to larger campuses. While there’s still opportunities to participate in clubs, societies, and events, the range of options is more restricted. E.g. larger campuses offer a broader array of extracurricular activities, cultural events, and social gatherings, providing students with more diverse opportunities to engage with their peers and enrich their university experience. This discrepancy in social activities can sometimes make it challenging to connect with peers outside of academic settings. Addressing this issue by expanding the range of social activities and events would help create a more vibrant campus community and foster stronger connections among students.
One of my highlights is the high-quality education provided by the Occupational Therapy program. The curriculum is well-designed, comprehensive, and taught by experienced faculty members who are passionate about their field. Their dedication to teaching makes classes enjoyable and enriching, fostering a positive learning environment. I appreciate the emphasis on evidence-based practice and hands-on learning opportunities, which have greatly enriched my understanding of occupational therapy principles and practices. Including a wide range both inside and outside the classroom. From hands-on to participating in student research projects to internships and study abroad programs, students have the chance to explore their interests and gain practical experience in their field of study and have a voice. This diversity enhances the overall educational experience and prepares students for future success.
The sense of community at my university is truly remarkable. Whether it's through student organisations, extracurricular activities, or campus events, there's countless opportunities to connect with peers and build meaningful relationships. The support and camaraderie among students create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere - everyone feels valued, supported, and part of an inclusive learning environment. From the moment I stepped onto campus, I felt welcomed and supported by both staff and fellow students. The university offers various support services; academic guidance, counseling, and disability support, ensuring that all students have the resources they need to succeed academically and personally.
Another highlight is the practical training opportunities available to OT students. We have access to state-of-the-art technology for problem-based learning in digitally creative ways and simulation rooms to practice clinical skills in a controlled environment. Additionally, we’ll have opportunities to complete clinical placements in diverse settings, allowing us to apply our knowledge in real-world contexts and gain valuable hands-on experience.
Overall, while my university offers many positive attributes, addressing the areas for improvement would further enhance the overall student experience and ensure continued success for all members of the university community. While I encountered some challenges, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive. I’m grateful for the quality education, supportive environment, and practical training opportunities that have helped me grow academically and professionally as an Occupational Therapy student.
