As a PGR you’re kinda stuck between being an adult and a student. You feel disconnected with most student social experiences and PGR specific activities tend to be a bit boring….its been a challenge to find something in between. There are societies to join but a lot of them seem dormant, or do very little activity wise. I think student soc should review societies regularly/ bi yearly to make sure they are active and present. Someone smart should create a non- professional type group for the Inbetweeners. The UofG life app is good, helps me to feel safe when I’m on campus late (SafeZone) but i still don’t know how to book a study space, I’m not familiar with all the building so don’t know what rooms are what. Also it has a supposedly handy directions function for finding buildings. It is subpar. It took me on a 20minute journey when I could have got there in 10. Surly a uni specific app like that will have in it short cuts etc. I like that there are microwaves in some buildings cafeteria area. It’s quite a diverse uni but could be more diverse. The Stevenson Sports gym has some really bad reviews. Not the type that can go on an online review but the type that you hear from word of mouth. It’s seriously put me off wanting to join. Fitness instructors not turning up for classes or running classes without music??? What. And the gym space is rife with inappropriate behaviour from guys towards girls. I understand that unless these things are brought up they can’t be addressed. Everything about my course is great! The teachers, technicians and support staff I have come across are all fantastic. I know I’m in the best place for my research and I’m stoked to be here.

I’m in a very old building but I have a shared office space and access to all facilities so I can’t complain. Not started internship or placement yet but there is good potential for that to happen. I set my own working hours, sprinkled with skills or tutorials that I need. I see my PI once a week or at least contact once a week. Time in the lab depends on where you’re at with your research, at the moment it’s 1-2 a week but when I start recruiting participants it could be every day.

It’s a bit expensive, I get a stipend and it’s still tight living every month. Rent is expensive and the general cost of living going up. I feel quite safe on campus and going home. The transport sucks in Glasgow. The subway is okay but shuts at 11.30pm. If you’re out in town on a night out, you’re screwed because the buses are rubbish. You’ll wait at least 20mins sometimes up to 50mins for a bus. The subway also has limits it’s. Some bits in the East and South you can’t go with subway. Trains are trains, prone to bad weather and cancellations which happen often. But, the cost of public transport is decent. Fairly cheap to travel by subway or train- bus is surprisingly more expensive, go figure.
