Overall, I'm very content with Leeds Beckett as my university. I don't regret applying to my course as I feel that it has given me the best opportunity to prepare for my future career. Despite its size, the community seems to be very tight knit. The community is often referred to as the 'Leeds Beckett family'.
During my time at Leeds Beckett, I've received some fantastic once in a lifetime opportunities. I've been able to attend specialised course field trips abroad to New York and many more, as well as being given the option to study abroad at fantastic specialised universities. I've been prepared very well for my career in the process with the help of tutors, guest lecturers, studio visits, exhibitions, and specialised events.
My only critism is that Leeds Beckett needs a bigger budget for certain things, but don't be put off by its size. As a student, it feels surprising small and tight knit to me. The atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming. I don't regret choosing Leeds Beckett, and I'll be very thankful of this in the future.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Facilities are generally good, but in the art school, everything has been compromised slightly. We have everything we need, but we could do with a few upgrades and more equipment. We're a digital art course that requires the use of printing pretty much all of the time. We have one standard little printer in the main studios. People often have to queue for it. There is a fantastic digital print room at the far end of the studios, but this is expected to be used for professional printing such as publications and posters. We need more standard printers for general stuff.Library facilities are fantastic due to the recent refurbishments. Sport facilities are fantastic. We've now got a new student radio station, but as the university didn't involve itself with the project, the studio is very simplistic and has been done on the cheap by the SU. It's a shame as many students would love a career in radio, but don't have the greatest of facilities to practice it in. If the university invested some money into it, it would have so much potential. It feels like the university is a bit skimpy with their budgets.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Fantastic student support with a number of services. The university is very supportive of areas such as mental illness, disabilities, LGBT communities, financial issues, and so on.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The university has two big student unions, it's difficult to review this as I've only been to the one within the city centre. The other one is located far out in a suburb of Leeds (Headingley). The city campus SU bar is quite outdated and shabby, this is just due to wear and tear over the years. The music venue is great though, we always have a wide variety of well known acts gracing our stage. Leeds Beckett seems to be refurbishing a lot of their facilities at the moment, so it wouldn't surprise me if they eventually refurbished the city SU bar. It has so much potential, and I would certainly visit it a lot more often if it was to be refurbished!
The Headingley SU doesn't seem to be too bad, it looks a little nicer compared to the city SU. However, the city SU is als a music venue, so it only makes sense to invest some money into it and refurbish is to its former glory.
As for the Students Union as a whole, they're doing a fantastic job. Within the past few years, they've convinced the university to invest in a lot of things that us students require for the best university experience. They seem to put a lot of events on too, which is fantastic.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Life in Leeds is great as a student. Due to Leeds being the home of three big universities, and several higher education colleges, it has a fantastic student vibe. There's plenty of shops, restaurants, clubs, music venues, and bars to choose from. Leeds still needs a lot of work as it's competing with its neighbour and rival, Manchester. However, new building projects and business openings make it evident that Leeds will soon catch up to Manchester in the future. We now even have a cereal cafe and a Five Guys! Leeds is perfect for anybody who wants the taste of big city life such as Manchester or Liverpool, but don't want too find themselves hopping onto trams or busses just to get from one shopping centre to another, etc. It's a compact city, which allows you to freely stroll from one place to another by simply taking a short walk. This is why I prefer Leeds over Manchester. It also feels very safe to walk around the city centre at any time of the day which is a rarity for a busy city. My only criticism is the road system and parking. Due to the idea that Leeds is a pedestrianised city, it's not very 'car friendly'. Many drivers find themselves endlessly trapped on the loop system, and there's also a lack of cheap places to park leading to many students deciding to leave their cars home which can become incredibly annoying!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
A wide variety of clubs and societies available for students to join. However, I feel like they're not promoted well enough as I was unaware of certain societies until I did my research.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Professional and dedicated tutors with a bagful of knowledge and experience to share with us as students. Generally very helpful, and we're all treat as individuals. Lecturers are incredibly intellectual and informative. We are also very priveledged to receive guest lecturers once, sometimes twice a week. However, my only criticism would be communication. There's a lack of communication between staff and students. Many of times I've found myself abandoned as I've struggled to contact my tutor or personal tutor. Also, facilities and workshops need to be improved. I'm a member of the Art school, and I can safely say that the facilities need a bit more money thrown at them to be upgraded. We also would benefit from personal work spaces as sometimes I can't even work in the studios due to lack of space. As for workshops, when we have them, they are fantastic and help me incredibly! However, there's not enough of them for what I pay for realistically. Workshops are available to us once in a blue moon, and whenever they are, they have a strict sign up limit of 15 / 20 people. There's 80+ people on the course. The course itself is fantastic, it's well designed and flexible. I think we need more career guidance and information about placements and postgraduate options however. It just needs a few tweaks, and then happily I would it recommend it to anyone.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
My tutors have done a fantastic job with directing me towards the right career pathway. My personal tutor is incredible, and never fails to advise me. As I'm a second year, I'm gradually becoming more certain as to what I want to do after my undergraduate course. This is all thanks to special guest lectures, workshops, future festivals at the university, and most importantly, my personal tutor.
Leeds Beckett has given me the confidence and back up needed to take the next step towards my desired career.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Accommodation is provided to a high standard thanks to the Unipol certifications. The university is helpful in this area, and there's even a special drop in office dedicated to the university accommodation outside of the library of you have any concerns. My only criticisms are the flat mate match system, and the process taken if you happen to be unhappy with your current living situation. The process is very lengthy and expensive.
