Leeds Beckett University is great, it features two campuses, one set in the heart of Leeds City Centre, and one set in the beautiful student area of Headingley. The University is very social and I have not found it hard to make friends with students from all walks of life. The facilities are great for my course, and the teaching is very well done. If the university does your course it is worth a look into, and is a must for sports and music technology/production students.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
As a Music student at Leeds Beckett the facilities are amazing, we have dozens of fully equipped recording studios with state of the art mixing desks. You can book the studios any time you want and you are even allowed to record you own band, or bands you work with absolutely free! Each studio has a control room (Mixing desk, patch bays, etc), and a live room (Room for recording musicians). A wide selection of instruments and microphones are available from the help desk. Overall the amount of high quality musical equipment is outstanding!
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Student support is pretty good at Leeds Beckett actually, I was having problems with my flatmates and wanted to move flat, the student advisors and my tutor had the issue sorted within a few days and now I'm in a nice new flat with great flatmates! :)
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The student union at Leeds Beckett is always putting on events and the drinks are cheap! Every friday at the City SU there is a rock night called Fuel, In my opinion it's probably the best rock night on offer in Leeds, and you get free entry to The Key Club afterwards!
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Life in Leeds is fantastic, it has a very lively social scene, and pretty much everyone is friendly. There are loads of student nights on such as Spaced, Fuel, Projekt, Prizm, Control, etc. A great mix of music there's a night out for literally everyone. There are a great amount of local pubs and bars, if you don't fancy the clubs too! The shopping is incredible Trinity shopping centre is huge and has almost every shop you can imagine, of course there are loads of shops on the high street too. In particular, Leeds is really great for music shops featuring Dawsons, Music Room, and Pro Music Technology.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Leeds Beckett has a massive array of clubs and societys. We have a huge amount of sports related societies such as hockey, football, wrestling, even free-running! There is a DJ society, a Rock Society which puts on local rock nights, Games society which features tournaments, there's something for everybody!
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I'm studying BSc Music Technology and in my first year, it's at the end of the first semester and I've learnt a hell of a lot so far. I came to university as a 'traditional musician' and now I find that it is second nature using a mixing desk, setting up microphones or recording and editing tracks. I've learnt about the acoustics of music, how sound travels and reflects, and even electronics. The lecturers are very friendly and humorous, they treat you like equals and if you have a question they will always be able to help!
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
There are great job prospects in Leeds, we have a job shop, where you can sign up and the university will send you vacancies related to your skills, as well as help on how to find jobs and apply for them. I regularly get emails from my tutors and lecturers about volunteer work within my course, there's even a chance I'll get to work at Leeds Festival as a sound engineer!
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Accommodation in Leeds can either be great or not so great depending on which hall/area you decide to live in. I live in Kirstall Brewery and I have a lovely refurbished room, with a double bed and huge kitchen. However there are only a few 'houses' which are refurbished. Most are just standard 'uni rooms' and aren't really that great. However, other accommodation sites such as Opal 1 & 2 are very nice, with large kitchens/rooms, as well as Carlton Hill.
