Freshers Week, and to an extent the first 4-6 weeks of 1st year, are quite different from the rest of university life. If you are unhappy during Freshers Week do not assume it will continue. For the shy types who are a bit intimidated by the fact everybody seems to be on a massive booze up noisy party, do not drop out after one week because you think university is not for you, you are more likely to meet like minded friends once things settle down.

It’s a very friendly and inclusive environment with activities that make people feel welcomed and involved. The student union is definitely one of the uni’s highlights, as well as the wide range of the societies on offer. On the music course I’ve found that being in the university choir has been very fun and rewarding, especially having the opportunity to sing in York minster at graduations and carol services. It’s also the perfect distance from the city centre.
Something to improve on would maybe be to have a bit more support from staff and departments on email, and build on the resources that we already have in the library.

As my course has varied levels of knowledge within students I feel some of us are wasting time by re-learning things we have already known for a while, yet on the other hand some others are struggling as the content is brand new to them. Maybe we could look into finding different levels of difficulty for different people so everyone is challenged to some extent.
Other than that, my course leaders are all very friendly and supportive and make lectures interesting and engaging. I enjoy the collaborative aspects of the course as well as other ensembles and societies. I really appreciate the new facilities we have in the creative centre as well as it makes it much easier to create and practice music. The hours of the course are very manageable and allow me time to study and practice individually as well.
