My best experiences at university definitely were my lecturers and the careers service. I really can say that they have boosted my self confidence after years of feeling rubbish prior to university. If I didn't come to Portsmouth I don't know if I could have had a similar or better level of support. My worst experience at university has been drinking culture. I never understood the need to drink alcohol all the time as a social event.

I appreciate how much the lecturers on my course really are enthusiastic about what they teach. That energy is quite infectious and makes me care a lot about doing well. What I didn't like on my course was the online classes of 2020/21. learning languages via Zoom impeded my ability to learn, particularly Mandarin.

The money I paid definitely was worth it, in the sense that it was the cheapest option and that it was clear they did not care for the accommodation. You got what you paid for. The halls themselves were terribly kept, the carpets in the hallway were stained, torn, ruined etc. The kitchen fire alarm did not work which was concerning. Silverfish were a nightmare in that building too, some flats were far worse than ours. Honestly, that building definitely breaks some health and safety procedures it does not feel safe to live in.

The support given to students is particularly good, being this in academic terms or IT problems, finance… The communication from the university is also something to congratulate, as they are on top of current issues (wars, cost of living, storms) and seem to be ready to act and help students in need. Some rooms specially in the basement in park building can get quite cold, specially the computer room next to the cafe, making it difficult to study there without a coat on. The cafe in park building seems to always be closed. People constantly go there to grab a coffee and it’s always closed, which is a bit annoying in comparison to the other buildings in the main compus, which have good choice of things and are always opened.

The course seems to be a little all over the place. Although it’s a languages course we don’t seem to have quite enough language specific module options. We have more linguistic modules which to be honest may sometimes look a bit random and useless. As for the course hours, everything is good. The lecturers are good communicators and respond quickly to emails.

I stayed in halls in the first year which was 2020, during the pandemic. For this reason I didn’t have the same experience as students may have now. I didn’t get access to all the rooms (study room, community room). So paying the full price then seemed a little unfair given the circumstances. Having security and reception at almost all times was nice.
