The facilities themselves can’t be faulted. The university is continually expanding and growing to the point that I have not found myself wanting for additional facilities. There are two vastly different feels within the university with the east campus being modern and sleek and the the west campus bring more brutish but also more charming. There are two main issues. There is also the issue of well-being support however this is perhaps a criticism of universities and society in general. There are a lot of students so disability support can be filled with long waits and replies but I do feel the support teams try their best, especially open door who I cannot fault for the effort they put in. The Law school specifically used to be more understanding during covid with the use of exceptional circumstances however despite opposition from the student Union this has been limited to three uses throughout the academic year and we have been told to ‘ration them’ as if mental or physical health can be rationed or predicted. The student Union in itself is also lacking, there are multiple smaller hubs throughout the university (although even these are lacking on east) however a true central hub would be appreciated however it is my understanding the university is planning to build one.

The first year was awful and that cannot be understated. The entirety of it was essentially online and it was a considerably difficult situation however I appreciate and accept that this was nationwide and not just york. The law course in itself is also groundbreaking in its use of problem based learning and developing legal skills. The flaws come in staff communication in optional modules. It becomes clear that the strengths of York law school lay in its core modules and its weaknesses lay in its optionals with weak staff communication, teaching, direction and general work. Perhaps this is an unlucky experience with the modules I have chosen, however the standards in these optionals simply does not compare to the course hours, contacts and standards of the core. I often find myself unsure as to works direction and the purpose of study and their is little guidance or support provided.

Constantine college can’t be faulted in its facilities, location or standards. It used to be the premium accommodation at the university however it has since been supplanted by the two most recent colleges. The rooms are nicely sized, clean and reasonably modern with large windows, showers and desks. The kitchens are once more large, modern and spacious with multiple ovens, fridges, cupboards and work spaces. The common area is considerably lacking however that may simply be the consequences of covid during my stay and the constantly manned and active hub of langwith college is only a 2 minute walk away. The weekly dinner that comes with the rooms is more questionable and was often skipped because the choices weren’t the best or it simply looked unappetising but some of the meals were nice and in truth it is essentially a free edition because they’d charge the same amount anyway regardless of a free nights food. The only criticism, and this goes for all of York’s accommodation, is the cost. The city and university are beautiful but the prices are insanity. The £170 upwards rooms are the same quality as £130 upwards rooms at other universities such as Lincoln, Nottingham or Essex. They simply aren’t affordable however this is an issue with York itself as private accommodations remains just as expensive. The University of York is a hard place to live as someone with a lesser amount of money.

The university offers a lot of opportunities for making money and supporting students during the cost of living crisis.

The course gives a great practical insight into the working world of law.

Considering it is one of the cheaper halls, you do get what you pay for. The wifi and maintenance is good and it is not that far from the university study areas.
