In my experience the student support has been brilliant, I had a period of temporary withdrawal due to ill health. Upon improving slowly after 2 years, Warwick have made my transition back seamless. I’ve had so much support in terms of overall well-being, making the deadlines for my essays due now, appropriate with my current studies. Most of the staff I’ve encountered are friendly and approachable, they know me by name and not a number. For what’s been an awful 2 years recovering bedside, have been made easier in getting back to academic lifestyle. The facilities are clean and there’s so much variety in terms of places to go or visit on campus. But saying this unfortunately it’s poor location on the outskirts of Coventry narrowly avoids the nightlife and city centre setting that Coventry university students are exposed to, Warwick students are relegated to leamington spa and the less populated nightlife it offers. To improve, the uni could really do with making an appropriate dedicated space for the post graduates and not just a 2nd floor of a gymnasium. To get there is halls and stairs in what feels like a warehouse setting. The parking prices are abysmal, despite the luxury of multi story car parks, £8’s for anything more than 4 hours is daylight robbery, mixed in with the outright ludicrous prices for coffees and food. There is a mixed feeling on campus, with some buildings and facilities making the jump to modern architecture and facilities but some still hurdled by the rustic insides of decades gone. Sometimes also, the complexity of the website and all the locations of certain pages/resources can make navigating the Warwick website a nightmare. As well as the reliance on tedious Microsoft software needed at every moment you want to log in to absolutely anything, even if you’ve already logged in 100+ times that day. Overall the university is backed up heavily by its ranking and prestige. But is let down by more trivial snags. I believe these are easily addressable by the staff, cohort and students union.

The style of teaching compared to my undergrad is woeful. There’s no dedicated lectures throughout the whole syllabus, minus 1 module. The teaching is comprised of self learning that is addressed in seminars but even then, there’s a lot of confusion with the reading materials given and the questions asked in the seminar, the rooms fall silent due to no one not knowing how to address the questions. Lectures that lead on to related seminars and questions would be far better and more linked to an undergraduate lifestyle. Contacting lecturers and tutors is fairly easy and I find they always have time for me, unfortunately the key let down is the structuring the course and how it is taught. This leads to a stand off-ish atmosphere with the teachers when questions that aren’t so easily deciphered from the subjective readings aren’t given promptly by multiple people.

Coventry is really the heart of the country, a rich history built upon multiculturalism that makes it easy for anyone regardless of background to fit in. A decent nightlife and choices of places to go out to. It isn’t quite as vast as the larger cities like London or Manchester but it definitely has a place of its own, especially with quick links to Birmingham.
