The library services and quality of teaching is great, but some of the student support services could be improved. For instance I was offered very little support as a first year struggling to find housing for second year, which added to my stress in the first semester

I’ve had issues with my door locking spontaneously from the outside even when my keycard has been on the slot inside which has caused me issues, but overall I’m happy with my accommodation

Newcastle University not only has a great campus, located in the heart of the city, but has students at the centre of everything it does. From ResLife supporting students with their accommodation experience to the Student Union providing activities throughout the year, there is a network of support from the university to ensure student's have the best time while studying here. The university offers hundreds of societies and sports clubs, ranging from baking to football, so there really is something for everyone! Sports night every Wednesday is a highlight for most students, where members of sports clubs dress up for socials and enjoy the nightlife around 'the toon'. Because Newcastle is ranked top in the UK for its nightlife, the university also provides support for students to help keep them safe on a night out, including advice about alcohol and drugs, whilst recognising that students want to have a good time. One of the main reasons I chose Newcastle University is because of the wide range of courses it has to offer. This was one of the few places in the UK where I could study translation and interpreting as a degree, which is a more specific course than I could find elsewhere. The teaching standard is high, with staff having a personal connection with all of their pupils, which increases enthusiasm for learning. The campus itself also has lots of opportunities for socialising, whether that be at live music events, or in the many cafes dotted about the university. The one thing which could be improved upon is the pricing of the Co-op on site, as it is rather expensive for students, and yet is one of the only supermarkets within a 20-minute walk of campus. That being said, Newcastle is a relatively affordable place to live, especially on a student budget, so this is only a small thing that could be improved. All in all, Newcastle University is a great place to attend if you want a friendly, student-centred atmosphere, where you can live out your best student life.

My course is taught in person and, because it is a relatively small cohort, each student has a personal connection with their teachers. Practicals and seminars allow students to put into practice what they have learned in their lectures, and provide in depth knowledge, with the opportunity to ask questions and have discussions with other class-mates. Each pupil is also assigned a Personal Tutor, who offers support throughout the duration of the course, with both academic and personal matters. Lecturers and seminar leaders are always open to questions, and have office hours where students can come and ask for help with anything discussed throughout the modules.

Windsor Terrace is the cheapest of the university-owned accommodation, and yet from its appearance and facilities you would not be able to tell. Just a short walk away from the Philip Robinson library, these halls are in a prime location for students travelling back and forth from campus, and the buildings themselves are charming from the outside. The bedrooms have been recently renovated, and so are clean and modern, and the kitchen (shared by 6 students) is a generous size and comes with lots of appliances, including, but not limited to, a toaster, a kettle and an air fryer. As a young female, I feel very safe at this accommodation, as it is in a quiet area but close to campus, and each resident must have their own key card, which they must use to gain access to their building. The only issue I, and other pupils staying at this accommodation, have experienced is the lack of a stable wifi connection. The internet cuts in and out, and I have had to resort to purchasing my own wifi router in order to solve this problem, as it is impossible to do work from home without good access to the internet. Aside from this, I am pleased to say that Windsor Terrace is a well-located accommodation option, which is good value for money, with decently sized facilities.
