OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I’ve really enjoyed my time at Oxstalls so far. I’m a mature student who came to the University of Gloucester, ready to move on in my life, and into a professional career. The support and guidance I’ve received thus far has built my confidence and knowledge in a range of subject areas, and has set my sights firmly on working to become the best paramedic that I can be. I’m really excited for the rest of the course!
Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Paramedic science is currently quite an attractive degree to hold, so we don’t tend to have many concerns about finding a job after we graduate and hold our registration. That being said, the university does provide a lot of support to ensure that we graduate with knowledge and experience to make us as competent in our role as possible. This includes things like work placements in different settings, practise educators, personal tutors, second year buddies etc.
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I like the variety of teaching / learning styles incorporated into my course. The subject matter is very broad, ranging from anatomy and physiology, to performing CPR, to detecting signs of abuse. To make sure we learn as effectively as possible, lecturers incorporate different teaching styles into every subject. It makes every session different, keeping us on our toes and making effective use of our time.
There are certainly points where I feel that too much is going on. The very fact that the subject matter is so broad means that we study multiple modules back to back. This can become slightly overwhelming, especially if I have to dedicate more time to a module I find particularly difficult to grasp, it can take away time and focus from being able to solidify my knowledge in a different area.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
10-15
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
SU seems fairly small at Oxstalls, but then again it is a small campus. There are 5 students reps and they made a point of coming to introduce themselves in induction week. Facilities include a bar, lounge, pool table, ping pong etc.
Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
There are plenty of facilities at Oxstalls campus to make sure that you comfortably spend a day studying there. Lecture theatres are mostly in good shape, with lots of screens / charging points / fast WiFi etc. The library has a good selection, and the team are helpful and work quickly. The two cafe / refectories have a good selection of deli style food / hot meals / coffees etc. There are social spaces, faith spaces and an SU building, so you can always find a spot somewhere to study / be with your friends.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Most facilities you could want are on site at Oxstalls (refectory, SU bar, gym etc). There are plenty of supermarkets and a good choice of bars and restaurants that are close by as well.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There’s a large range of societies and sports clubs, they cater to most people, from the main stream to the more alternative types.
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
The support is great. There are multiple sources of support including personal tutors, practise educators and 2nd year buddies, all of whom can help with learning development and address any queries / concerns about study or practise. There are also helpzone staff, a finance team, a Chaplin and faithspace team who can all help with just about any issue a student can face.
