The University seems to spend a lot of money on campus aesthetics and what I would bluntly call vanity projects and comparatively less on practical facilities for teaching and studying. There is not nearly enough study space on campus, but, for instance, a large new mosque has just been built outside the main foyer and the outdoor space of several of the cafes has been redecorated several times since I have been studying at the university.

I was offered some fantastic opportunities to work in the department as a PhD student. I cannot praise this aspect of the course highly enough. Colleagues were mostly pleasant and approachable but not always. My experience of being a student at Exeter in the studying aspect was less positive. One of my two supervisors was very friendly, but hardly ever contactable and for over half of my PhD was not at work. No replacement was offered during the interim. My other supervisor was more present, but made little bones in hiding that they did not much like me or my research, mostly - as I understood it - due to differences in outlook and general worldview. I was publicly snubbed after passing my viva, for instance, where this supervisor and the two examiners announced that they would customarily be going to the pub after the fact, but I was not invited.
