University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
The teaching staff are very academic and teach at a high standard. The lecturers know what they are talking about, and are happy to answer questions and help when asked. The lecturers recommend a good range of sources for critical analysis, which is important for university. The resources in Swansea University are superb. In addition, socialising in Swansea University is great because there are a grand number of societies and there is a night club, which has great prices for alcohol. The coffee shops, Cost Cutter, John Smiths bookshop and Lloyd's bank are all very useful.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
There are plenty of computers and the printers are of a good quality. The library is massive and has plenty of study areas.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
In the old buildings where the Abbey is located (which has a great view) there are several offices, which are dedicated to student support.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Freshers' is great! The Student Union put up a tent in front of the main building, alcohol is cheap, the music is awesome, and you just have a great time with new people. Friday nights on campus are fabulous at Diva's/Tooters.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
The shopping in Swansea is not too bad, has most shops which every student needs for example Primark. However, it is just a short journey on either the Grey Hound (a coach run by First, which is free to travel on if you have a university 3 term or yearly bus pass) or the train to Cardiff for shop till you drop shopping. The restaurants in Swansea are great and the famous Wind (pronounced wind like fruit winders) Street is a great night out. Alternatively Mumbles is a great place to go out with the parents. The beach is huge! There are lots of activities to do too like the cinema or to go to the LC2.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There are plenty of events held every week.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Courses are taught in big lectures theatres so the lecturers teach via a power point presentation, but they talk for about 50 minutes applying their knowledge to the power point too - which just has the basics on. Lecturers are very good at speaking, and are helpful when needing advice. There is a lot of reading to do in all of the courses, but that is the point of going to university.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Swansea University is seen as an international university because they are lots of different ethnicities and cultures. The university has great links world wide. The university offers a lot of work experience placements, and is very big of job prospects.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Living in the student village is good because you have a bit more freedom with not being on campus. The furniture is pretty basic; a bed, wardrobe, a chested drawers, a bookshelf, a bedside cabinet, a desk, and a couple of chairs. The kitchen is quite big. There is two bathrooms; one with a bath tub, sink and toilet, the second with a shower, two sinks, and a toilet. If there are any problems with the heating/water it usually gets sorted within 24 hours.
