University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
So far so good, its sounds a bit OTT but really living the dream, I am studying to work in the industry I love, surrounded by cars and great kit, the other students are friendly never had any trouble. One things I like is no hidden costs, apparently some uni's charge you for materials you use like Carbon Fiber etc, but UoB have a no extra fees rule or guarantee
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The faculties in the NCME are brand new, some of the buildings are old brick one but all the kit is good, a friend is on the SVFX course (Film and TV special effects) and they have model making and studios to do animation, not my area but all the kit she tells me is what is used in the industry toady.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
The tutors are amazing the bloke that runs NCME used to run racing teams for Nissan and Vauxhall so is from the industry which is very inspirational.
I've never had to use the counseling but they have it on offer I have seen the dog about they have a pet therapy, they also have a multi faith prayer room, which is not for me but good they have it.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The student Union has lost of groups and events going on everything from chess to football, quite a few spots clubs which do well they have had student teams in national finals. Food is good at the Vista Café by the SU. Also if you have questions the SU are normally happy to help.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Bolton is a Northern town, the people are great I like it.
Its very close to the country and in a couple of miles you are in the hills or if you fancy the west end bright lights 20min on the metro and you are in central Manchester so location is good.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
I spend most of my spare time around NCME doing extra work but I have one friend in the football club and one in the games, they both like them but I tend to use my extra time in NCME.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
The best part was the variety, so working on CNC machine, Carbon fiber ovens, wind tunnels, rolling road and electronics. The facilities are very modern only a few years old and a custom built facility. One of the best parts is I walk past James Hunts British GP winning car every day, a reminder of where I want to be.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
18
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
The work placements were amazing, I went to WRX at Silverstone and worked as part of the pity crew, I also got a chance to work as part of the dat team in British Touring cars BTCC. The team at NCME are great and the equipment you get to use is state of the art but the experience with the racing teams helped me decide this is the right career for me. I want to be a data engineer in a race team. If you want to work in motor sport and you are not a great driver or have rich parents this is the way in, I never imagined I would be one of the team in overalls in the pits helping the car and driver win. They have also just started with electric drives, the last thing to mention (which is very cool) if they build the Keating Supercar at the university as part of my lessons I get to work on a 300mph super car that people can buy!.
Very happy I chose Bolton Uni, at first I did think Bolton? But its OK, cheap good local food places and bars.
Bolton is good but the course at NCME for me has been lifechanging.
