The mutual respect established from the very start by both students and staff has made classes incredibly enjoyable. I have found myself pleasantly surprised at the ease with which we all share personal work - there hasn’t been a moment when I felt unsafe to be myself, which means I can push myself in my creativity. The reading lists on the courses I’ve taken have been widely varied, making sure there’s something everyone will enjoy and introducing us to a lot of new concepts/styles of writing we wouldn’t otherwise attempt. Due to the extremely heavy workload that tutors are faced with, there have been times when feedback/marking has been delayed or somewhat disorganised. This is something that has been raised by student representatives, however. In general there is an effective system for student feedback and voices to be heard and responded to.

The course is largely taught in-person, only going online in cases of illness or transport disruption. When this has happened, things have run relatively smoothly. The lesson lengths are long enough that discussions can be in-depth and everyone can contribute, but not so long that concentration is lost. A short break halfway through often helps. Tutors are assigned to each student, with one to one sessions available for discussion/workshopping throughout the academic year.
