I believe St Mary’s is a great university to study at as all members of staff are welcoming and supportive. All information shared by professors in lectures and seminars is posted on Moodle, meaning that lecture slides are always available for students to access at any point in the semester. This is useful as it allows students to revisit lectures to improve their notes and refresh their knowledge when completing assignments. Being on campus is never boring as there are always exciting events being run by the student union, such as movie night, creative workshops and karaoke night, which improve the student experience and give students the opportunity to be social and make friends. There are also a vast number of clubs and societies available for students to join, ranging from sport clubs such as football and rugby to wellness and film societies. Students are also able to undertake various roles within the university whilst also earning money, as the student union offers paid positions to students which are flexible. However, one way in which I believe St Mary’s University could be improved is by creating social spaces such as music rooms/studios where students can express their creativity through music, whilst also socialising with their friends and meeting students with the same interest in music. In my opinion this would be a good addition to the facilities that the university already offers, as I believe students would benefit from having access to creative music spaces where they can socialise and work on their musical skills. Furthermore, providing students access to musical equipment such as iMac’s, music production software and various different musical instruments could highly benefit students who are interested in exploring their passion for music but may not have access to such equipment at home.

St Mary’s University offers a variety of different courses related to many different fields, from education to acting and sports management. Additionally, students can easily book one on one tutorial sessions with their professors during which they can discuss any queries they may be having regarding the course or their progress. This allows students to ask for help when they feel they are struggling, whilst also giving them the opportunity to receive constructive feedback in order to know which steps to take in order to improve. Course hours vary depending on each course, however most courses offer students a flexible combination of in person and independent learning, with most courses requiring students to come in 3 days a week. Class times are carefully planned to ensure that students who commute are given enough time to travel to university.

This university is a small campus which gives it a nice feel. The lecturers are all very friendly and willing to give additional support if needed. The services that the university offers are very clear and accessible if a student needs any help and generally it is a nice university to attend. In terms of improvement, students who live at this university have a points system to buy food which isn’t ideal as it means they often don’t have enough for three meals a day. The accommodation lacks basic kitchen equipment such as an oven/stove. The university has also recently put up their parking prices which makes it a struggle to attend lectures all day for commuting students paying for themselves. There are a few small tweaks like these things which would make the university a lot nicer.

I really enjoy my course as I have found the content to be manageable and the additional support has been available if I’ve needed it. The contact time with lecturers is pretty good and we are taught in class. The course hours are great as I’m only in university a few days a week allowing time for a part time job as well. In terms of the worst aspects, it is heavily coursework based and often we have multiple assignments due in at similar times which can be stressful.
