University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
So far, I have loved everything about University. It is nice to have my own freedom to do work, have library facilities 24/7 and easy access around the town. The clubs and opportunitues that come within them have been important for me and I have enjoyed meeting new people.
Although, I do find University life rather expensive!
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
As a whole, the facilities suit my needs to study, eat, and do all the basic things I would need to do during the day. There are 2 librarys situated on the campus, with the largest welsh library next to campus. The University provides updated software, computers, resources, etc. To further aid work and study.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Regular meetings can be made with tutors and lecturers which allows students to collect feedback and ask for advice, etc.
Feedback is provided on assignments and seminar work which can further help when we study for exams.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The Students' Union is one of my favourite places on campus that I attend to regularly, holding 3 pool tables, a bar, starbucks, little shop, seating areas, and other facilities.
The food that they serve as a whole is nice and some is rather tasty, although other areas of the menu is overpriced and a bit bland.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
The University sits on top of a very steep (and very long!) hill which can seem impossible to tackle at 8.30am. Although, parking is available on campus, as well as public transport, for those who live in town. It is convenient that the majority of student homes also sit on top of the hill, across the road from the Univeristy Campus.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There is a good variety of sports and societies at Aberystwyth. If anything, there are too many to choose from! At the beginning of the year, i had joined about 7/8 sports and societies in total. However, due to my studies, I have cut it down to 3. Although, only one of those I attend regularly, Aber Pool. This is one of my favourite things about the University. It is great to have a chance to extend my abilities in Pool and compete in competitions accross England and Wales. The group of people are easy to get on with and dedicated to the club. Next year I hope to obtain the committee role as a social secetary (sorting social affairs for the club. E.g. recruiting new members, etc.) And perhaps I will go for the role of Women's Captain in the future.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
As an advantage, the course and lectures are flexible in terms of work load. The amount of work that needs to be done is set over long periods of time so that you can get other stuff done in the mean time and not have to worry too much on hand in dates. Although, this means that there is less pressure put on students to complete work and therefore the freedom can be abused.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
10
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Adverts on employability are displated all around campus and University websites. There is also a careers hub in the SU building which guides people towards part-time work, post graduate jobs, etc. They can help with CVs, applications and ither useful bits for employment.
