Queens is a greet place to study , I feel it has a great uni experience. Firstly the university itself has gorgeous architecture and the facilities are first class. The uni preserves the rustic look of the university campus on the exterior but inside every thing is new and modern. The university is in a great location also and is very excess able.

The teaching is mostly in class which I think is very important and really helps . The facilities are extremely good and chemical engineering labs are top notch , I really could not fault the course , saying this at times the work load can be strenuous and become overwhelming.

The university itself is great. Students union has everything you need such as study areas, a Spar, plenty of options for lunch, the SU bar does really nice food and it’s not too expensive either. Some buildings are nicer than others so I’d recommend having a look before you go to avoid disappointment but they generally have everything you need. The McClay library is 24hour which is brilliant (sounds crazy but trust me you’ll need it). The only thing I’d say is there’s no parking literally anywhere near queens unless you want to risk getting a parking ticket or you can parallel park well enough to get a spot in the holylands.

If you want to do chemical engineering prepare to teach yourself. Everything. The lecturers are lovely but most of them do not speak English as their first ( or even second) language, so it is difficult to understand. The quality of the lectures is not worth the tuition fees so go to the library, get the textbooks, and start praying (I’m not even religious). The practicals are interesting and actually help with understanding however they don’t correspond with when you’re actually learning the theory in lectures, so again you have to teach yourself to be able to do lab reports. It is a lot more intense than most other courses (9-5, 5days a week, even from 1st year) but this will hopefully reflect in the salaries we get when we graduate. I would recommend chemical engineering, however it is extremely difficult. If I could go back in time, I’d do more research into different universities that offer the same course and especially look at student satisfaction. I don’t want to put anyone off and if you’re smart enough to get into the course you’ll be fine. I’ve made it to 3rd year so it can’t be that bad!

Belfast has lots of opportunities. You won’t struggle to get a part time job if that is something you’re interested in as there are plenty of bars, restaurants, shops etc. within walking distance of Queens. Nightlife is great, plenty of events for freshers. Lots of more chilled options aswell if that’s what you’re into. Safety on the other hand, depends on who you are unfortunately. Also the police here are diabolical. Do your own research and decide what is right for you. Most of Belfast is okay but learn which areas to avoid if possible. I grew up here so I know how it works. If you have never been before, I’d encourage joining societies and forming relationships with like-minded people, as it is important to have a supportive environment, no matter where you may go!
